RE: [Wlug] Finding more detail defined settings.
by Keller, Tim
I went to Google and entered in "Explanation of tcpip settings in /proc"
and this was the first hit I got back, which has what I think you are
looking for...
http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.kernel.obscure.html

Most of the best /proc/ documentation is available on your system.
/usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt
Contains assorted, but limited, information about all aspects of the
/proc/ directory.
/usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/sysrq.txt An overview of
System Request Key options.
/usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/sysctl/ A directory
containing a variety of sysctl tips, including modifying values that
concern the kernel (kernel.txt), accessing file systems (fs.txt), and
virtual memory use (vm.txt).
/usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt, A
look at various IP networking options.
/usr/src/linux-2.4/ Some of the most authoritative
information on /proc/ can be found by reading the kernel source code.
Make sure the kernel-source RPM is installed on your system and look in
the /usr/src/linux-2.4/ directory for the source code.
Adjust the kernel name (linux-2.4) to whatever is appropriate on your
system.

Re: [Wlug] Seeking someone to install SuSE Linux
by Robert Schwein
Actually, the SuSE distro may have been a fortuitist gift for him. On
July 8, 2004 Novell had become the first networking infrastructure
vendor to reach an agreement with the U.S. General Services
Administration to participate in the SmartBUY program for
government-wide software purchasing. As of today, for many reasons
including security, Novell's networking infrastructure software (SuSE is
part of this) is still the only off-the-shelf software of this category
in the SmartBUY program. The sole provider of open source software in
the SmartBUY program, Novell offers three Linux bundles - a desktop
solution, a "starter pack" server solution for smaller departmental
deployments, and a more managed/full featured server solution for large
environments. Vista has been around for over a decade and runs on
various OS platforms. However, over the past year the government
(initially the Veterans Administration) has been slowly replacing its
Windows, and small islands of *n(i,u)x installations with SuSE.
The only reason I happen to have any familiarity with this is because
about a year ago the Federal Court system in this area asked me to
migrate them off of RedHat and Windows over to SuSE. I was surprised
but when I dug into what was going on, I understood. With WINE and Mono
providing the Windows and .NET support on SuSE, the government is moving
at an ever increasing rate in adopting the SuSE distro.

HI gang,
I'm not certain if Mel truly has a preference for SuSE or if he
mentioned that because of the CDs I gave to him (I suspect the latter).
Clearly there are a lot of good choices and Ubuntu is one of them. His
interest in the VistA open source medical software may be driving this
decision.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested ubuntu (ubuntulinux.org) I
had that installed on my Compaq Evo N600c for a while before reverting
back to Gentoo. (I'm normally a Gentoo user everywhere, but Ubuntu is
just so easy, quick and painless I had to give it a shot.) I'd have
to say its about the easiest distro to install. There is even a
version that comes with KDE pre-setup called Kubuntu (kubuntu.org)
You can even try the livecd to see if it can detect all the hardware
on your laptop. The standard (non-livecd) installer uses the same
logic to do the install, so if the livecd works the real install
should as well. The thing that will take time is the actual download
of the livecd and installer cd.

Seeking someone to install SuSE Linux
by Andy Stewart
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

HI everybody,
Mel Korman came to his first WLUG meeting this past Wednesday asking for
our help to get Linux installed on his laptop. Those of us who attended
the meeting thought that his RedHat 9.0 might be too old for its
installer to comprehend the external USB hard drive on which he had
hoped to copy Linux, so I gave Mel the SuSE 9.3 Pro CDs which I had at
the time, in the hope that he'd have a better time with the installation.
Mel gave it a try at home but things are not working. Mel has offered
to pay someone who would be willing to get Linux installed on his
Thinkpad laptop (where Windows is also installed). If you are
interested in helping Mel, please contact him directly at
finkor(a)verizon.net.
Thanks!
Andy

Meeting minutes from earlier this week
by Andy Stewart
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

HI everybody,
We had our meeting in one of the rooms right off of the Morgan Hall
dining area. I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers
(welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more
interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding
graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the
meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few.
After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC:
http://www.realvnc.com
http://www.tightvnc.com <--
There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop,
which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was
possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....).
In addition, Mel K. (newcomer) brought his laptop, onto which he wanted
to install RedHat 9.0, which was having trouble recognizing his external
USB hard drive. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give
that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress.
Pizza / soda followed at the Tech Pizza restaurant where we've gone
after the last several meetings. Mel mentioned that he has interest in
VistA (open source medical software). Try http://www.vistasoftware.org
and google turns up other seemingly related links.
Later,
Andy

Hi Everyone,
I have lurked for a while now, but first post to this list. Just wanted
to say that the "suspend to disk" feature is available on a desktop machine.
With Gentoo I use the 'suspend2-sources', and have had no problems with
hibernating both my Athlon 64 desktop computer, nor Pentium3 laptop.
A good howto is available on the Gentoo Wiki site,
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Software_Suspend_v2 The instructions are
fairly informative, that even non-Gentoo users should be able to use the
howto as a stepping stone to getting the feature into their kernel.
Hope this is of some help.

Not the MOST obfuscated, but darn near the slowest:
If I could only embed that alst cur assignement!
#!/bin/sh
if [ $# -lt 3 ] ; then
echo "Usage: $0 <infile> <incr> <outfile_prefix>"
exit
fi
while [ ${cur:=`wc -l $1| awk '{print $1}'`} -gt 0 ] ; do
tail -$cur $1 | head -$2 > $3$(((`wc -l $1 | awk '{print $1}'` - $cur) /
$2))
cur=$(( $cur - $2 ))
done
Thanks
Brian
