Topics for upcoming meetings..

by Tim Keller

I've got some updates and ideas for the upcoming meetings! I've reached out to Daniel Moghimi about doing a talk regarding his work on the various security issues he's found in modern CPUs. He's agreed to speak either March or April. I'll work to finalize the details with him. I'm definitely interested in doing a Keysigning party, we'll just have to work out the logistics and what additional presentations that we'd like to go along with it. I know a while a go Eric Martin showed off a cool keyfob that had his key stored in it. I recently stumbled across a cool technology called "Node Red" which people are using to do automation stuff with IoT and MTQQ. https://www.nodered.org It allows you to create flows using their graphing engine. Another piece of software that people might find interesting is subsonic <http://www.subsonic.org/>. It lets you run your own music streaming service. This way you're not subjected to whatever algorithm spotify / pandora / etc wants to subject you to! I recently helped a buddy build a home nas to run it and it's pretty damn slick. Let me know if you have any more ideas for meeting topics! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Retro-puters

by Mike Peckar

Some fun reads on retro projects in links to hackaday. I wasn't aware of the book mentioned... https://boingboing.net/2020/02/04/766826.html

That does sound like it died too early... do you have one of those USB-to-SATA devices you could use to plug into another computer just to see if it's alive? Another option is to install Knoppix or some other bootable distro on a thumb drive and boot there to see what you find. As for the Windows and GRUB issue, I'm not expert enough to make it work without some more details from you. It might be enough to just move the Windows boot drive to the same port that the SSD used to be on. Assuming it's a SATA port and not an M.2 port (which can be SATA). John

It's a 1TB SanDisk SSD Plus that I bought in July, 2018. It's the OS drive in a computer that runs 24/7, primarily as a Plex server, but the media is on a different, spinning drive. https://photos.app.goo.gl/e8AmriKjcPRdHshcA On Sun, Feb 9, 2020 at 9:11 PM Michael Voorhis via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Tell us more about this dead SSD. I think I counted 14 in a few minutes. Thank you for your work. I'm glad to know that someone knows why it happened, and that it is not just another "new normal". -- Keith

Tell us more about this dead SSD. Who made it? How old was it? What sort of load did you put on it? --MCV. On 2/9/20 3:24 PM, Richard Klein via WLUG wrote: > Well, the installer can't partition or write to the SSD, so I guess > it really is dead.

Re: GRUB failure

Well, the installer can't partition or write to the SSD, so I guess it really is dead. Should I write a new MBR to the spinning disk that has Windows installed so I can boot to it without having the SSD installed?
