Hey all, I wanted to remind you all of the Installfest we are having at WPI this Friday, sponsored by the Worcester Chapter ACM. We will have developers from Gentoo, Debian and Redhat along with a couple of other activists in the Open Source community to participate in a panel discussion and Q&A session. Later in the evening we will beging the actual Installfest. Our Gentoo Rep may also being doing a short presentation on Embedded Linux, which is sure to be interesting and fun. The keyboard is a bit small but it's not unusable, at least it's got the keys in sane places, unlike some small machines (dell mini). I think it makes the perfect portable terminal or ebook reader. Parts are very cheap and it's not difficult to work on. It's a bit like a more modern HPLX machine, though a little larger. Power management support- with the stock build is very recent anyway. I don't think it could even suspend to ram until earlier this year. I'm not certain how many more updates it'll get with the two new hardware versions (and windows) coming. That's one of my main reasons for sniffing around for alternatives. :) Take care, James

Unable to make it tonight... still planning on presenting in Oct.

Hey Gang, I'll be unable to make it to the meeting tonight, however I still plan on doing a talk next month on "pygame". What's "pygame" you ask?!? "pygame" is a set of python libraries that wrap SDL written in C and assembler. These libraries take the nitty gritty out of writing games with python, or as they put it "we take the pure out of game development". I'm going to talk about the libraries in depth (with slides), show off a silly game I've written and then dive into the code of the game so you can see how absurdity easy it is to use. Obviously my talk is going to be python centric, but no worries. I'm using this as an excuse to teach myself python so it'll be educational to the python guru and the python neophyte alike. Well not for general computing, but I find it to be a nice PDF reader with its nifty screen. ;-) While I like the reader in Sugar, I want to see how well the other FOSS readers work on the platform. If I get some time, I might take your suggestion to simply yum install a light-weight desktop. PCF has an XO-1. I played with it when they first got it. “Sugar” runs on top of Fedora, so there’s no real reason to re-install unless you want Debian or Ubuntu. I’m too lazy to find instructions on how to get it to boot into XFCE instead of Sugar. WPI ACM Installfest

Hi all, Sorry to say that I wont be able to make the meeting tonight because I have class, but I figured I would talk to you all in email so you may be able to discuss this tonight. I am the ACM president at WPI and on October 2nd we are having an Installfest starting at 7pm in Fuller Labs. I am in the process of getting some speakers from various linux distros and O'Reilly for a panel discussion/Q&A session and afterwords we will have an installfest in one of the labs. If anyone here is interesting in attending or even better interested in talking/volunteering to help with the Install that would be much appreciated. Hi James, I haven't looked into getting full Linux onto my XO yet, but I want to get more use out of it. If you do get a distro onto yours, could you post an outline of your process? On a separate note, did you have keyboard trouble with yours? Mine suffered the notorious "sticking ctrl key" issue, so I had to disable the built-in keyboard. :-/.
