AMD64 and 32-bit apps

by Carlton C. Stedman II

Recently I've begun considering migrating over to the amd64 platform (my motherboard just died on my athlon xp system, much to my chagrin) and figure this is a good place to ask for users experiences. I'm not worried about my video card drivers, since NVIDIA has great amd64 support, at least, so I'm told. My main concern is that I need to install some 32-bit emulation libraries and kernel modules, so I've read, to compile 32-bit apps, and that some compiled 32-bit apps will only work under a 32-bit environment, requiring me to setup a seperate environment to chroot into. I'm running gentoo and I'm up to the task, just wondering if anyone has any experience in this specifically and anything I should be concerned about or not to worry too much about. RE: [Wlug] SOHO LAN & Multiuser Desktops

by Skip Gaede

I've used the Linux Terminal Server distro before. (http://www.ltsp.org/) It's a bit of work to setup, but keeping the clients working is a piece of cake. --Skip -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-bounces@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Bob George Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 10:21 AM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] SOHO LAN & Multiuser Desktops I'm successfully using NIS+NFS for a small SOHO LAN serving 4 desktops, a server and printer, plus associated networking. I'm wondering, though, if there's an easier approach to configuring a "Windows replacement" multi-user setup. I do have printing, file sharing and "roaming profiles" working fine, but it's a bit cumbersome so far. Is anyone working with an approach that might be simpler... particularly one well integrated into an existing desktop distribution? - Bob _______________________________________________ Wlug mailing list Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug

gnome-terminal/mutt question & solution

by Bill Mills-Curran

Ok, this is going to read more like a detective novel... :-) I'm using mutt in a gnome-terminal on fedora core 3, and I'm up to date (within a week) with updates. I find that, with the defaults, the terminal does not refresh when it needs to. A ctrl-L repaints the window just fine. I did (just now!) find a fix... Right clicking on the terminal -> Input methods and select "X input method"... Everything works fine, except this setting is not persistent. The setting affects all gnome terminals and new ones opened. However, if I first close all terminals and start a new one, the setting is lost. So, how to make the fix stick? I have no idea, but I did find this info on the subject: http://www.webservertalk.com/archive204-2004-9-379265.html This gives a link to a new terminfo file which you can use to fix the problem, and a nice way to install it without editing the distro-supplied file. Thus far it works fine. Bill

Re: [Wlug] fedora 1

I just wanted to apologize for spamming the list (by spamming the list) with my attempt at humor ... I was just thinking about e-mail viruses, and I felt nostalgic about a time where e-mail viruses were a joke that could never happen because, quite simply (with exception of those people who used emacs) our mail reader was just a mail reader ... a method to display text on a text console. Some days I miss that. Other days, I just revel in gmail and get over it. So yeah, sorry 'bout that. I hope that at least three of you saw the humor ... 'cause then my ramblings weren't a complete waste of CPU cycles. Are you talking about on the Windows side, or the Linux side?? The one virus that you should be concerned with on the Linux side is a particularly insideous virus called the "Good Times" virus. This has been around since the early 90s and can target any e-mail system. It continues its resurgence despite repeated efforts to put it down. You can find out more about it and how to protect against it at: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/notes/Notes09.shtml or google Goodtimes virus. Consider this my public service for the year. Fedora 1 - Realtek card (swapped out the MN-130) - dualboot with Win ME - and working like a charm:) It's so much faster cleaner and better than the old Windows that I wish I could get rid of Win entirely but I know if I do somebody'll complain so it stays. Now - what're good security measures for a public internet terminal (which is basically what it is)? I already have the firewall set at a high level, but what should I do beyond that? Do I need to setup some form of antivirus protection? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.10.2 - Release Date: 4/21/2005

Caching DNS

by Chuck Noyes

Hi All, I just installed a caching DNS server at work on a SuSE 9.2 server. It works great. My question is how can I view the contents of the cache? I've "googled" around and looked at the HOWTO docs, but no joy. Thanks, -Chuck

[OT] Python Jobs

As some of you may already know I was at Dragon Systems in the mid 90's porting their speech recognition product to the Alpha platform (under NT :( ). In my heart, I would like to do it all on Linux. All shipped code will be on Windows for the foreseeable future. Since it will all be in Python, most of it will be pretty crossplatform. Please pass this along with that caveat. -- Sean Sean True CTO InBoxer, Inc. send replies to: "Sean True" <seant(a)webreply.com> Personal notes: Sean lead software at Dragon during the period of time that their new continuous speech recognition (CSR) product was developed. That product, "Dragon Naturally speaking" is still considered the best "CSR" on the market today. (it is now owned by "ScanSoft") Managing large groups of software developers is never an easy task. At Dragon Sean was an excellent leader who took care of his people. He understands software development from both the developers and business needs perspectives. Full Disclosure: I have no relationship with Sean's company, financial or otherwise. I'm posting this because I believe it will be a good place to work.
