Hi Rich, The meetings are open to the public, so feel free to join us! There are no fees of any kind, unless you choose to make a small voluntary donation. I generally put a plastic penguin container on the back table, and sometimes folks put a couple of bucks in there to defray the cost of the soda and cookies which I usually bring to a meeting. The closest thing we have to a membership list is our mailing list. People (un)subscribe at their leisure. As far as hazing, we don't bother. Living in a Microsoft dominated world is hazing enough, don't you think? :-) Later, Andy - -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA, USA http://www.wlug.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFEPW5WHl0iXDssISsRAvrpAJ9rZbKzILxQilczLQ3oUdIweKVg9QCghIgd 5lBHbmbv8asx8IGqxwipMPU= =9eUs -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Re: [Wlug] Tonight's meeting

by Mike Leo

I am only answering for Andy as it is late in the day and I wanted to make sure you had a chance to get this before it was too late... I just showed up the first time as well, and they didn't beat me or make me run Windows as punishment, so I think it is OK! This is a good bunch of folks and I'm sure you will be welcome, and someone is always there to help out with problems...I'll be bringing up RH Clustering myself. Hope to see you there. Meeting topic

by Mike Leo

Not a technical one, but I have been coming to meetings for maybe a year now, and have not had a chance to introduce myself, and more importantly, haven't found out who you all are. With no topic tonight, can we just have an re-introduction of the members so we know who these emails are coming from? thanks

Heh, lately I've been tinkering with my first 32-bit PC, a 386DX/25 with 8MB ram, 1.44MB floppy, and an old SMC Ethernet card. I can boot 2.6.15 on it, with uClibc+busybox from the buildroot project (like Andy's RouterBoard), and still have around 200K on the floppy for apps/data. One thing that bugs me is that /proc/cpuinfo shows only 3.08 bogomips, but according to this I should be getting ~3.92, http://tldp.org/HOWTO/BogoMips/bogo-list.html#AEN244 I should check the overclockers sites, maybe some LEDs would make it go faster. ;) Granted, I wouldn't have use for 10 of these, but I like to keep a few old systems around just for fun. Anyway, I hope to make it to tonights meeting. I saw someone mention PDAs a few messages ago - I picked up an Agenda VR3 from some job lot outfit on eBay a few weeks ago. A failed product in the market, but I had always wanted one in my collection. Haven't really played with it yet, so I can't talk much about it, but I can bring it for show and tell. -Jamie

I actually suspect that the Ubuntu Livecd is based on Ubuntu. Re: [Wlug] Ubuntu CD's

Thats all good info! My plan is similar, but to use the Ubuntu liveCD during the class, and let them take their copy home with them. Who ever brings a laptop can participate in the hands on parts of the class (which I haven't made up yet) via the liveCD. Ill have an overhead with the slide's on it and can dump out to a terminal when needed. nice link, too..i might just modify that to my environment. Andy ordered a nice pile of the last Ubuntu...maybe he can do it again with dapper dan (or whatever its called). thanks --- Adam Keck <ghostis(a)mac.com> wrote: > > On Apr 11, 2006, at 11:37 AM, Mike Leo wrote: > > > I made the mistake of offering a linux basics class at work. > > > > Since when is teaching a class on Linux a mistake! ;-) > > Actually, I have taught two such classes to the front-line admins at > work. Of the two, the far more successful class used floater laptops booted with Knoppix. Knoppix much reduced the setup time and allowed me to keep the floater laptop guy happy by not blowing away the XP installs on the machines. I highly recommend it for teaching.
