Fw: Missing Inkscape from Suse Linux 9.2: Never mind

by douglas.r.aker＠verizon.com

Never mind. Got my answer from Novell's website. My "other thought" was indeed correct. There's tons more software on the 2 DVD's than on the 5 CD's. The Novell web page even lists *exactly* which packages the CD's don't contain. I don't have a DVD drive on the Suse Linux 9.2 laptop, but I was able to read the Inkscape .rpm file on my Windows laptop which *does* have a DVD drive. Then I ftp'd the file to my Linux laptop and did an install from a local directory. The box the software came in prominently lists, as an included program, Inkscape, the open-source vector graphics editor. The mystery is that I can find no reference to Inkscape anywhere in the system, not even in Yast when searching in the "Install and Remove Software" dialog. Now perhaps I messed up and didn't choose Inkscape during the initial install, but shouldn't Yast still list Inkscape as a "Not Installed" package? My other thought is that perhaps Inkscape is included when you install from the 2 DVD's, but somehow Novell messed up and didn't include it on the 5 CD's. Thanks, Doug

I have SUSE 10 installed, and I'm sure it's on the DVD (though I already had Inkscape installed under 9.2.) If it's not there, it's easily available at Inkscape. In fact, it might be better to download it because the version on the 9.n distribution set would not be the latest and greatest. HW

I returned it and got one that was mentioned on the website (above) and have had no problems since. I'd recommend some care with cameras. My Logitech camera uses the pwc driver which has minor issues with Linux. Maybe the USB 2.0 devices fare better. Just about any off-the-shelf "flash stick" or USB-connected hard drive enclosure will all use the kernel's usb-storage and SD drivers. Lots of cameras, too. Brian J. What USB flash drive device to choose for Suse Linux 9.3?

by douglas.r.aker＠verizon.com

Hi All, Quick question: Is buying a USB flash drive device for Linux something that needs a bit of research? Or, by and large, will any old device work? I've got Suse Linux 9.3 installed on an HP Omnibook 6100. Thanks, Doug
