Re: [Wlug] Screen resolution on my laptop - HELP!

by Gregory Avedissian

I'm assuming you tried "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and it didn't work. First of all, take a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for hints. See if there are any errors listed (lines that start with "EE") and see what driver it's trying to load. Your video card should be using the trident driver, but it might be trying to load the vesa driver. Let us know what you find. Manual edits in xorg.conf to try would be to specify the driver, specify some screen resolutions, and if you know them, specify monitor frequencies. Here's your xorg.conf file back with suggested edits. Try uncommenting the Driver line first, and if you need to, then uncomment SubSection "Display" lines. If you don't like those resolutions you can change them to whatever is appropriate for your screen. I only left the most basic ones, as they are most likely to work. You can add more after you get it working. Don't uncomment the HorizSync and VertRefresh without putting the right frequencies in place of xx, yy, aa, and bb. The new xorg is great if it works with your hardware, and if it doesn't, you're up the creek without a paddle. Good luck. Screen resolution on my laptop - HELP!

by Andrew C Wilkin

I am trying to adjust the screen resolution on my Toshiba Portege 7140CT. I'm sure it's an adjustment in the xorg.conf file, but I don't know enough to do it properly. As a matter of fact, I tried following online instructions only to have no resolution - only lines and a frozen machine. I need this done in the next couple days, please, and would be willing to drive a reasonable distance to have you look at it. If anyone can help me, either by rewriting it for me via email or by my visit to get it done, please let me know here or by calling my cell: 508-713-5947. Thanks! Andrew Wilkin

Hi Walt, When it is frozen, can you ssh in from another machine? Ping, even? -Jamie On Tue, 24 Feb 2009, Walt wrote: > Nope, the ONLY two things that work are the light and NmLk. Nope, the ONLY two things that work are the light and NmLk. These are operated (on my Lenovo X61s) using the Fn key. None of the other Fn key functions operate at time of lock-up. So I'm assuming a panic. Thanks! Walt Chuck Anderson wrote: > On Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 07:44:05AM -0500, Walt wrote: > >> I can turn the light on (ThinkLight) and the NumLock. Wow, thanks! I guess I have some logs to look through. Thanks, Walt E Johnson wrote: > Walt, > > Next time it locks up, after you reboot, get a look at > /var/log/messages. It works well under Linux except for the ActiveX stuff like sound, which doesn't work at all, and live panning, which staggers. The motion sensor and recording is done in the device itself so your OS doesn't matter there. Also the only wireless security I can get my camera connected to my router with is WEP. When I set up WPA or WPA2 it won't connect. Not sure why. I haven't been able to google anyone with a similar problem. My other devices all connect fine. So I am happy with the camera and would recommend it, but there could be better cameras out there now for the money which I'm not aware of. -- Gary

Wireless Video and Linux

by Ritacco, Alan

Has anyone had any experience with wireless video camera(s) along with motion sensor detection and recording in Linux? Looking for what works well, what to buy, install, etc. Thanks Al

So the little house-shaped light with the "A" inside it that represents the state of the Caps Lock function doesn't blink all by itself? Because if it does, that indicates that the kernel paniced. If it doesn't, then the kernel did not panic.
