So I’d like to join today, but I haven’t joined you in for years, I’ve been a silent viewer of the emails for some time. But how do I request to join today? I'm not aware of any VNC client for KDE on Wayland, anyway (rather annoying that each compositor has to reimplement the same functionality).

I love using it, it's quick and fast and works nicely. It just fails miserably on Wayland right now. With 95% of most linux users only using desktops or laptops, and not doing remote desktops across WAN connections, they don't realize how poor wayland is for that type of work. I'm not even sure if Wayland works ok for LAN based remote desktops, though mostly I think VNC works ok for that.

I'd never even heard of X2go! These days I'm a heavy user of NoMachine <https://nomachine.com>. Tim. I got a new desktop system for home and installed Ubuntu 24.10 (?) as a test, usualy I use linux Mint for my desktop. Anyway... x2go wouldn't work when connecting to another system, so I googled a bit and figured out I needed to change my desktop to use X11 instead of Wayland. Once I did that, it was ok. I can dig up details if people need them. John

Meeting this Thursday!! April 10th 2025!

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting this week! Time: 7pm Date: April 10th 2025 Location: Technocopia 44 portland st. Worcester MA Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Topic: Oh.. so much to talk about! Kernel 6.14 and ntsync, gaming on linux, patch frequency, X11 vs Wayland, docker desktop, k3s! I expect we'll diverge into half a dozen other topics as well. Afterwards we'll head off for dinner and keep talking. Thanks, Tim. I'd also like to start a new trend and that's to spend a few minutes at the end of each meeting agreeing on a topic (or at least an idea) for a topic for next month. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Yeah! I'm still not convinced that wayland is better. I've got a number of apps that are just broken on wayland still. Tim. This might be old news, but Ubunt 24.0.X can still run X11 https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/how-to-switch-from-x11-to-wayland-on-live-ub… CodeLight is no longer seems to lock up and a Steam/wine game I play seems to start without errors. I have not spent much time testing this.

Re: If flight simulators are you thing!!

by dmildram＠gmail.com

Clueless about flight simulators! Can't even (barely) find and work controls on .....wow, google-earth-pro (free) with an obscure flight simulator you can get+run on linux! Did anyone try and/or get much control of airplane on....(i posted this a year ago, mar2024) Stumbled into install cmds for google EARTH PRO (free), worked on Linux Mint20. 1) wget https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/current/google-earth-pro-stable_curre… (result: GOT a 58mb file named google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb) 2) sudo dpkg -i google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb (output: Preparing to unpack google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb ... Unpacking google-earth-pro-stable (7.3.6.9796-r0) ... Setting up google-earth-pro-stable (7.3.6.9796-r0) ... Processing triggers for man-db (2.9.1-1) ... Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.24+linuxmint1) ... Processing triggers for mime-support (3.64ubuntu1) ... (DONE). LAUNCH TO OUTER SPACE: 3) $ google-earth-pro If you see a few continents from space, good but here's the fun: ========First zoom to somewhere you know, use upper LH Search, enter your address or fun place. Adjust eyes, or ignore briefly, fuzzy view of map, streets, trees, whatever. The fuzziness disappears or changes, if you enter Flight Simulator from here. ==== PULL DOWN MENU for "Tools" has "Enter Flight Simulator". Choose the slower plane, not the F-16 jet if you suck like I do. The mouse now flies the plane. I want to skim over my hood. I use my four arrow keys , mouse-moves work too but I flip out. I know I'm missing some kind of flight/plane control, should RTFM if there is one. I thought Flaps controlled pitch/up/down, but my Flaps stay at 40% and I crash in hilarious various mistakes every minute or so. What fun! Resume Flight brings all control back so off you go to die again....

Re: Reboot required questions

by dmildram＠gmail.com

I sent a longer reply an hour ago, but you've been temporarily spared (got a "await Moderator" email reply due to "Message contains administrivia", cool, what software is our forum on now/again? THANKS Moderator(s)). 2 new semi-concise/stage1 questions for OP/Ron: Q1: How old is computer, do you do backups, is your HardDisk still oldschool spinning platters? (if you still use an old(er) HD, I'd rethink the concept of nightly shutdown. Platter shaft grease gets old/hard -> sticky/striction HD ...may decide not to spin up someday. But a tiny hammer on the HD during powerup could revive...I'll never forget the day TWO of my NetApp HD's on a raid5 (ONE dead disk allowed to rebuild itself, not raid6 which can survive 2 dead disks. My server room had been powered off all night due to a bldg planned night of shutdown! And the backup robot my CA boss sent me, was failing to do sane backups for my MAss/work servers for past weeks on that NetApp. A revisit to server room with sm hammer, a few taps, got one stuck HD to spin, NetApp rebuilt the raid5 ! ) Q2: if "losing my personal files" is the biggest worry (shouldn't it be?), do you have your personal data on a 2nd disk of any speed, to augment an SSD for the OS ? Secondary worries of course include nuisance of having to reload OS+me if the Update Manager makes a giant mess, which (apparently never happens) || (...not to me, ever) long as linux auto-updates have existed in/on my dwindling beasts/zoo. OS magic/behind-scenes: I do believe on instinct that the Update temporary files are stashed to LOCAL HD so you can even do your finish-update bootUP with No Freaking Network up. Hope my aging gut remains right on that.
