HI everybody, Here's a quick reminder about upcoming events. ================================== Wednesday, April 18th: Richard Stallman will be speaking at Holy Cross in Worcester Location: 112 O'Neill Hall Time: 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM Here's a map of the campus: http://www.holycross.edu/about/camp_mapbw.html ================================== Thursday, April 19th: WLUG meeting Location: Kinnicutt Hall, WPI in Worcester Time: 7:00 PM Speaker: Bob Ziegler, Linux Firewalls ================================== Monday, April 23rd: Delphi Developers' Group Meeting Location: Allaire Corporation, Newton, MA Time: starts at 7:00 PM (be there earlier to setup) Directions to this meeting can be found here: http://www.discom.com/delphi/ I will be giving a presentation to this group (details can be found at the "Meetings" link on the Delphi website). A group of WLUG volunteers will be on hand to demonstrate Linux software. One person who had volunteered to help at the Delphi Developers group has had to drop out, so I am looking for 1 or perhaps 2 more volunteers who'd like to come to this meeting to help out with demos of Linux on their own hardware. Please get back to me ASAP. Thanks! ================================== Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder -o) | "I have the world's largest collection of Worcester Linux Users' Group /\ | seashells. Re: [Wlug] Cable Modem Charter.net

Have you turn off your cable modem for few minutes when switch from Windows machine to Linux machine? That is very common problem that I have seen and happened to me before. > I was wondering if someone can help me > configure a cable modem to use in linux. I think the issue is configuring your computer. The cable modem is probably configured by the cable company (I bet they came in, ran Windows and got that working and then left. At that point the cable modem was "doing its thing" and you were left to fend for yourself on the linux side. That was my experience here in Shrewsbury. Incidentally, this is not all that unreasonable. After all they are a business and cannot afford to go far off the beaten path.) > I setup my ethernet card eth0 this seems to have taken > because I can ping localhost. However I cannot ping > past it. Hi As one responder has already noted, we really need more information. However, I would suggest you start by typing ifconfig (You will probably have to be root to do this; just type su and enter your root password. Type exit to get out later) This should show an eth0 entry in addition to the lo entry. If you have no eth0 entry get back to us (we have to backtrack). If you have an eth0 entry, look to see what the "inet address" is. For example, on the computer I have connected to the cable modem (Shrewsbury cable, but the general approach should be the same) give 216.195.16.123 which tells me I am on a network not in the local 192.168.m.n class so I read this as an address assigned by the cable company (dhcp, as an earlier responder indicated is likely for you too). Next try route -n Here I get three lines of interest, something like 216.195.16.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.248.0 U eth0 0.0.0.0 216.195.16.1 0.0.0.0 UG eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U lo The last line is your loopback address (as already noted by an earlier responder, a side issue). The first line meshes nicely with the ethernet address we saw above for eth0. This line says that, to get to anything in the network 216.195.16.0 with netmask 255.255.248.0, go out eth0. That makes sense. That card is on that network. The next line, says that, to go anywhere in general (that's what the 0.0.0.0 means) go through 216.195.16.1. That is another machine on that same network, and represents the "gateway" machine sitting somewhere in the cable company's office. Note that now my machine knows how to go anywhere. First it can use the first line to get to that 216.195.16.0 network and second, if it wants to go further, it can go to that specific gateway box at 216.195.16.1, which it can find since it is on that 216.195.16.0 network the first line tells us how to reach. (The U and UG says "up" (and running) and "up" as a "gateway".) Poke around now and see whether you can find any of these pieces for starters and, for security/safety exit su when done :-) doug -- Douglas R Waud 17 Lantern Lane, Shrewsbury, MA, 01545-2006 http://www.ummed.edu/pub/d/drw/

You need to have DHCP setup on your linux box to use this properly. I would suggest you get 'pump' to do the work. You may already have it installed, and if so, just do the following as root: pump -i eth0 and see what it says. Check with 'ifconfig -a' and with 'netstat -nr' to see what IP address and routes you get. John

Testing the printer looked funny because i didn't have the black ink cartridge in there. it looks like the Linux driver for the z32 is assuming that you have both the color AND the black cartridges. i'll find out for sure this weekend. FWIW, i'm running RH7.0. i tested the printer from the control-panel's Printer Configuration tool. the ascii test went through the motions of printing, which seems to have been explained when i did the PostScript test: only the color parts showed up, nothing that would have been black, which is why i came to the conclusion i did. i hope that much helps. Re: [Wlug] Cable Modem Charter.net

by Mike Gorse

I am not familiar with charter. Do they use dhcp? (I'd guess that they might since MediaOne and RCN both do.) If so, have you enabled a dhcp daemon? Pump, dhcpcd, and the ISC dhcp daemon are the ones that I know of. Your distribution should include at least one of those; someone should be able to tell you specifically how to set up dhcp if you let us know which distribution you're using. Anyway, sorry if you've already done this and it still doesn't work. Your being able to ping localhost doesn't mean much, though, since localhost is generally set to 127.0.0.1, which is the loop-back interface. Cable Modem Charter.net

by William Hine

Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me configure a cale modem to use in linux. I am on charters network. I have tried myself but it is not working. I setup my ethernet card eth0 this seems to have taken because I can ping localhost. However I cannot ping past it. TIA, Bill __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? But in the true Linux/internet spirit, I will write a page or two of free advice anyway. > I am having alot of trouble. How much of it worked? > to but my printer just gets a post script file, which it > obviously doesn't understand. That may be caused by sending it a postscript file. Have you tried sending an Ascii file? If you want to send it postscript you need to set up a filter to translate to Lexmarkian. Ghostview may be such a filter (it wants to be, but I don't know if it supports the Lexmark). > Tech support refuses to help me saying > that because I am using Slackware it isn't supported. Is that Lexmark tech support, or what? I'm surprised they know enough about what you are asking to be able to be so specific about what they don't understand. It's probably not an obsinate refusal to help but genuine lack of clue. (Never attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity.) > But Linux is Linux right? No. In addition to versions for Intel, ARM, Sparc, and Alpha, there are Beowulf (multi-processor clusters), uClinux (for embeded micro-processors without MMU), various build options for experimental hardware or special purpose file systems, RAID devices, military grade security, or kernal debugging. But none of that is relevant to your problem, because the Linux kernel has nothing to do with getting your data into a form your printer can understand. My guess is you would be having the same problem if it were HP-UX or BSD Unix. -- -- Keith Wright <kwright(a)free-comp-shop.com> Programmer in Chief, Free Computer Shop <http://www.free-comp-shop.com> --- Food, Shelter, Source code. ---

Lexmark z52

by Doctor Orbitz

Has anyone here setup a Lexmark z52 printer in linux? I am having alot of trouble. I set it up according to how I think the documentation tells me to but my printer just gets a post script file, which it obviously doesn't understand. Tech support refuses to help me saying that because I am using Slackware it isn't supported. But Linux is Linux right? Thanks, Orbitz
