It is my understanding that a crossover cable is needed when connecting two similar devices such as 2 switches or 2 routers. Maybe your cable modem has some builtin router functionality?! USB hangs system - requires reboot

HI gang, I just installed SuSE 7.2 Professional and upgraded to the 2.4.6 kernel (SMP). For the very first time, I'm attempting to enable the USB controller on my motherboard to talk to my Epson 870 printer (which has both parallel and USB interfaces). The onboard controller is an 82371AB. I looked and noticed the following kernel modules loaded: usbcore printer usb-uhci I think this is correct. I've enabled verbose debugging messages in the kernel. I looked at /var/log/messages, and it is detecting my printer. Also, I ran a program called usbview and saw the printer there as well. OK so far. I tried: cat some_file > /dev/usblp0 I get about 1 line of output and then my entire system hangs (it completely ignores any keyboard input, mouse movements don't cause cursor movement, and the machine is unaccessible from the network). I end up reaching for the reset button and waiting forever for my disks to fsck (yes, Tim K. I'm seriously considering Reiser fs). :-) I'm not sure I know how to go about debugging this...any suggestions? Oh, by the way, I did insure that there were no parallel port modules in place that might somehow interfere. I haven't used Charter for very long (2 months at the most) for net access, but I only had a problem once. When I eventually got through on the telephone, they were as stumped as I was (although there had apparantly been a surge of problems that morning in my area) ... modem would shut off whenever the activity LED first blinked. We eventually agreed that a tech would come out and look at it. 15 minutes after I hung up, it was working again. As far as setting it up: when the techs came, I let them mess with my father's Win98 computer. They even ran a new line to the house for better reception. After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover. (on another note... I see they've finally synced chartercom.com and After they left, I rewired a bit. There is no guaranteed way of doing this from the OS since each driver is different (kind of annoying). You can look at mii-tool which should be able to get/set the network settings if the driver supports it. Otherwise it's dmesg or another driver specific method. If you just want to know the speed, your card may have a 10/100 mbit LED/set of LEDs on the back which will tell you. (My Kingston KNE111's at home have "100mbit" and "Full Duplex" LEDs, which will handle the 4 possibilities. If the speed is mismatched, you won't be on the network at all. If the duplex is mismatched, you'll just get bad performance when doing certain operations (namely quick read/writes). You can determine this (usually) via "netstat -in" and looking for I/O errors and collisions on a FD network. > If anyone can help or has similar experience, please give me a shout. Determining speed of device...

Got a quick question... Other than looking in dmesg for what the driver reported the speed of the cable of the network device, does anybody know what utility or place in /proc that'll tell you what the speed of the cable connected to your machine is. Thanks, Tim.
