MythTV questions...

by Bill Smith

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I know that I could get some answers from the MythTV website, but I'm looking for some opinions, since others have been talking about the Tivo/MythTV stuff... I've got a Matrox Mystique and Rainbow Runner card (it's a little "old, I think) that I have been thinking about using to make a MythTV-ish system. (The Rainbow Runner is an add-on TV tuner card for the Mystique.) Given that I'm not expecting spectacular results with something like that (I mostly want to play with it), what sort of base system should I use it in? (CPU speed, Drive capacity, RAM?) Any suggestions are welcome. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- William Smith wsmith-at-chezsmith-dot-com Fall River, MA http://www.chezsmith.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFC/V+Iz+l4y7Xx77MRAnkWAKCQt+gLgbbY+NaLGxs2GotJoXdMdACdFhYb gmf8SBL6Cp1Dcv4c5Q4rklk= =jahA -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

One thing I wish my tivo had was a 30 second jump ahead. That's something I plan on binding to one of the remote buttons. > I've been on the fence about MythTV for a long time now, just not sure > which card to get. It also has audio and video out, so you don't need to have a seperate video or sound card. That's the one I'm looking at picking up. I also want this for a dvd player, so that's one other bonus over the tivo. -Marc

It's between the Hauppauge 250, 350, and new 500 cards. I just haven't done enough research to find out if the HW decoding in the 350 or the two tuners in the 500 are supported in Linux. The 250 is normally the sure bet except I have a really old CPU (700) so the HW decode sounds quite appealing. If anyone has any experience with the more advanced cards, please pass the knowledge along. thanks BR

One good thing about MythTV is that there is a plugin to allow it to function as a DVD player too (with a DVD/R/RW drive)... I've been working on one for a while, but the mobo I bought might need to be RMA... -Jared On 8/12/05, John Stoffel <john(a)stoffel.org> wrote: > > Marc> So I've been thinking about picking up a PVR card and turning an > Marc> old machine I have lying around into a MythTV box to replace my > Marc> tivo to get rid of that nasty monthly fee. > > I've got a TiVo and I love it, but I paid up front for the lifetime > fee. So I've been thinking about picking up a PVR card and turning an old machine I have lying around into a MythTV box to replace my tivo to get rid of that nasty monthly fee. Does anyone have any comments on the comparisons between the two? Will I miss my tivo? Does mythtv have equivelant options for season passes or recommentations? Thanks, -Marc

A little late and I'm not really a public speaker but... I have recently configured a fairly complex directory which backs a number of applications Unix/Linux accounts , SAMBA domain, Open Exchange Groupware, Jive Messenger (a jabber server), postfix, VPN Concentrator 3500. All user / group account information is managed through smbldap scripts from IDELX which I patched to also support the Open Exchange attributes and some convenience stuff for bulk adding users and keeping passwords in sync across all applications. This is an attempt to rid my network of Microsoft and it's working well so far, for a company of 63 people. If someone is looking for some uses for LDAP out side of just an email directory I may be able to help. Or if you just have any questions. I would not consider my self an LDAP authority but it took quite a bit of work/research to get this working. -Matt On 8/8/05, John Stoffel <john(a)stoffel.org> wrote: > > I wish I could make the meetings, since I'd like to talk with people > about getting udev to work with these MP3 players, since it's a semi > black art. I wish I could make the meetings, since I'd like to talk with people about getting udev to work with these MP3 players, since it's a semi black art. Though there is a good writeup on the net about how to use udevinfo to help setup things. Someone needs to write a tool to scan the bus, ask you to insert the device, then re-scans the bus and suggests the udev rule(s) to make the device do what you want. Then, in the futire, it would just work! As it is, writing udev rules is a bit of a hit or miss, though once you get your mind wrapped around using udevinfo, it' isn't too bad to figure out what to do. John

If/when this happens, it will be at some future WLUG meeting (not Aug 2005). I would like to see this happen! In an earlier email, Frank Moody said that he would see about setting up his iRiver with his laptop. With that, I think the meeting would then be about MP3 players. Eric, please bring your ipod and whatever you need to do a demo of it. If anybody has a different type of MP3 player that works with Linux, bring it along, (the more, the merrier). I had hoped to have my new MP3 player for the meeting, but the dude on eBay from whom I purchased this player is taking his time shipping it to me (auction closed 02-aug, not shipped yet...). Thanks! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Time flies, especially in the summer. I can't believe its already time for another WLUG meeting. Our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 PM. What will we discuss this month? I was hoping somebody had an iRivier or iPod MP3 player with the Linux software working that would bring it to the meeting to demo it, but so far, nobody has volunteered. (iRiver, iPod, iAudio, for what does the 'i' stand - individual??). One possible area of interest is directory services (LDAP). I don't think we've ever had a talk on that subject. Its my understanding that LDAP is good for more than just creating a giant list of email addresses for an organization. Another possible idea would be a talk about databases. What are the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL - are they technical or is this a religious war? OK, I've tossed out a few ideas, but to make it work, we need a volunteer. Re: [Wlug] SSH connection.

by Eric Martin

Mike's two questions are your best bets right now. If sshd is running and iptables isn't blocking port 22,check your system log. Also, go into /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set LogLevel=DEBUG. That will give us loads of info. Also, what are you using for a client? if you're using ssh, turn on debug on the client side. if you're using puTTY, you can just view the event log by right clicking on the title bar (although you'll have to configure it to not close on exit).
