Moving boot drive from hdb to hda

I am in the process of recovering my system from a bad drive and have almost succeeded. My system had 2 drives both were very similar in that they each had a version of linux installed with a swap partition and primary partition. The hda drive died in a way that made the mbr unavailable. I switch the drives making hdb hda. I then booted into a rescue mode (Suse) and modified the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and replaced the references for hdb with hda. It now reads kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x31a splash=silent desktop resume=/dev/hda1 showopts initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd I also modified the /boot/grub/device.map file. Upon rebooting the system it comes up allows me to choose at the grub menu and proceeds to boot. The boot messages are: Checking root file system... fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) Failed to open the device '/dev/hdb2': No such device or address Warning... fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hdb2 exited with signal 6. < more messages > file system is currently mounted read-only. This may be a little late but you can use perl to do this the Net::LDAPS module will make secure connections and just use the Net::LDAP::Entry object to insert you data from linux to windows. It turns out that on my system, in /etc/sysconfig/syslog, the loglevel is set to 1. If it is set to 8, then all of the kernel messages will come out on the serial console. Netcat, used as I described (on the system that is receiving messages), is fine. The kernel is outputting the log messages over the network via the netpoll infrastructure. Right, I forgot about that jeff. If you're running syslog-ng, you can go into /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf and add a line: destination console_all { ("/dev/ttyS01"); }; although, I'm not sure if you're locking up if syslog-ng will keep scrolling. I don't know if netcat (nc) will either...
