The porting part is all taken care of, thankfully. Although one of the platforms i'm working with is cygwin. rpm already uses uname to determine the OS. But if you build a package on one system, say Linux and i try installing it on Cygwin, i get the error the the package was build for a different OS. I want to build a rpm package simaliar to how noarch rpms, but instead of arch independent i want it to be OS independent. There are tags for the spec file '%ifos ... %endif', but that's only for the build machine. I also noticed that in the system rpmrc file (/usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc), that all archs are compatable to 'noarch' like so arch_compat: alpha: axp noarch but i don't see a common name that all OSs are compatable with. i don't think this is possible but i thought i'd ask anyway. Wireless

I just bought a new Netgear Ma401 wireless card. I figured it was pretty cheap and it seemed like it was supported under linux. Well after doing some research I've found conflicting views. Some say its a PrismII based card, some say its a Orinco card. I have no idea and I'm new wireless with linux. My question is, does anyone have this card and wants to point me in the right direction. Or can someone point me in the right direction for wireless and linux in general. Assuming you're using a reasonably current linux distro, you probably want to be doing this through pam. http://search.cpan.org/search?dist=Authen-PAM should get you going. This way you'd get all the locking and atomic operations that you really want when messing with the passwd files. Interesting enough after I sent the last email. I did some research (yes it was quick research) and came up with a couple things that might iterest you. There is a package called MD%-crypt which should suit your purpose (http://search.cpan.org/doc/LUISMUNOZ/Crypt-PasswdMD5-1.2/PasswdMD5.pm) I also found, http://search.cpan.org/doc/SSNODGRA/Unix-ConfigFile-0.06/PasswdFile.pm, which provides access to /etc/password and does everything for you. I would suggest going to www.cpan.org and getting the md5 package for perl. Or even better, I'm sure someone has wanted to do this same thing or something similar and might have even written all or most of the script. CPAN is the place to look. you could look at the source code to the passwd utility or the apache htpasswd program.
