Well, there are a bunch of other places to look if you want to play with smaller embedded-style systems. This is a great board (from what I've heard): http://www.denx.de/embedded-ppc-en.html And man are they bad-ass looking...PPCBoot (http://ppcboot.sf.net/) runs on these boards, and Linux runs on them already, so perhaps it's not the best board for a porting experience... If you want some real fun, get some cicso router that has a powerpc -- I'm not sure of anyone who's got that working quite yet. Honestly though, porting to a new board without a hardware debugger (like the BDI2000: http://www.abatron.ch/BDI/bdihw.html) will be a lot more work. Unfortunately this will push the cost of the setup over the hobbyist level. The BDI2000 is especially nice since it has support for walking the Linux software page tables, and with the bdiGDB firmware allows remote hardware debugger with GDB from a linux client -- very nice! > Where is PPC guru huberj? hah! -- Josh Huber

man, times are tough...money's hard... was wondering if any o' you cats know anyone who's hiring. i'm you're all purpose desktop support guy...and yes, i really do like helping end users. mad skillz: installing (name it), some dns, some email, html, javascript, php...blah blah you guys have always been cool and will continue to be i've been out of a job and bummed for like 3 months now...no keyboards or call tickets or programming or teaching or linux classes or anything for me :-( except what i boogie with at home! :-) thanks much -jeff debian freak lover of the RUBY language tech instructor (part-time...and i mean VERY part-time) very stressed/burnt out tecchie who just wants to have fun

My personal favorite is dhcpcd, since it is the most straightforward to compile. Building it against uClibc statically gets it down into the 33k range! i've been running linux on my PowerMac 7500 for years. As for embedded PPC or development PPC boards there are several to COTS (consumer of the shelf) to choose from. Boils down to what speed, power (electrical), and onboard options you want (i.e. sound, 4 serial ports, ethernet etc), bus type - SBC, pci, pc104, vme. check out http://www.cotsjournalonline.com bewarned - not for hobbyists prices... more like the military. Hobbyists can best look at old PowerPC computers or less powerful powerpc embedded boards from motorola/ibm.
