RH 8.0 uses GCC 3.2, which compiles code that is fundamentally incompatible with kernel code compiled with RH's GCC 2.96 in 7.2. Hello, About 24 months ago I gave linux RH 6.2 a try. I am not a programmer and not very familiar with unix or linux. I did get the linux to run and was able to connect to the internet but had a lot of trouble getting printers to work and found it generally difficult for someone with my skill level. WLUG was very helpful and I though that in a while I would try again. I think that this fall I am going to make another effort. Are there any suggestions of what distro to try. Basically I will have a dual boot system with either xp or 2000. I have a PII 450 with 196mb ram and 13gig HD. I appreciate the advice. Tim, That's what I figured, but I'm not aware of how to specify an irq inside modules.conf; it just has the module with no parameters. sources???

I'm looking at some software I have to build at work, and I'm trying to work with RedHat 8.0, even though I don't have it yet. I'm curious about a particulare "binary" package: kernel-source-2.4.18-14.i386.rpm and similarly: glibc-kernheaders-2.4-7.20.i386.rpm These are clearly source files. How do they compare with: kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm ???? In particular, I'd like to try building my package (targeting 8.0) on my 7.2 box. (Maybe that's unrealistic. It's a fibre HBA driver module.) At any rate, why the mixup with the "sources"? And, why would header files be non-relocatable on the install? (At least the kernel headers are with 7.2. TIA, Bill

You should be able to specify with options in the conf.modules or modules.conf when the module loads which IRQ to use. Hi gang, I've tracked down my usb problem. It appears that both my acpi and usb controllers are competing for irq 9; what I need to do is set my irq for usb to 11 and then it should work. How do I switch irq values?? Wes

I'm sorry I didn't follow this thread from the start, but I can explain how we have Samba setup at our client site: We are running Samba 2.2.2 on the server side (Solaris 2.6 or 2.7) with mostly Windows 2000 clients connecting on the client side. When I want to map my home directory from my Windows 2000 client, I use Map Network Drive and supply the following information: Drive: <some letter> Folder: \\clemens\simoncim When I hit finish, it maps my Unix home directory without any problems.

One thing, though, is that I've confirmed my "senior moment"... My recollection of a place to add a username (without a username box/prompt) was completely wrong. I was remembering the WinNT method of specifying a different NT domain with the username in a username box. <sigh> I have some more ideas/requirements. 1. I'd like several shares, each mounted with a different linux/samba username, so that, when my "users" work from linux (staroffice), they have the right ownership/permissions for their files. 2. I recollect that samba has a feature that will allow the Win98 box to specify a password without a username. Samba then looks to see if the password matches from a list of username/password entries. It then allows the mount, using the username that works with the password. (Do I have this right, or is this another senior moment?) 3. Does Win98 have a "remember this password" button on the mount gui? (I'm not so much worried about security behind my firewall as much as I'd like to get the ownship of the samba-shared files right.)
