Hi gang, I just received an e-mail from Rob Bellville from Millbury Public Schools. He has a bunch of old PowerMac 6100s and was wondering if it made sense to convert them to work as thin Linux clients (similar to the Linux terminal server project (ltsp.org)) If somebody would like to take a crack at doing this for a couple of these PowerMacs as a proof of concept, give Rob a shout at rb(a)millbury.net. We are disposing of about 20-30 PowerMac 6100s and I was wondering if anyone in the WLUG group had any experience with thin linux terminals (LTSP.org) I've got one of them running mkLinux right now and I have a nice hefty Dell server (1GHz / 512 MB RAM) that could power quite a few of these clients. I'd hate to throw away all these Macs when they could be used somewhere within the district. They are 66 MHz / 40 MB RAM / 600 MB HD with NICs. The only problem at the moment is that timing is critical. They are being stored and need to be removed in the next month. I can let a few of them go to someone who wanted to work on them at home. I'd like to be able to have them be at the very minimum an Internet terminal and maybe run StarOffice or something similar. Let me know your thoughts. Like I said, this project could be done outside of the school and then come back to clone the remaining Macs after they were tested. I would be willing to give a few of them to someone as compensation. I'm still in a hectic school-construction mode so my participation will be limited to a minimum but I would be happy to deliver the Macs to anyone who was willing to give it a go. Also, it would be a good thing to write up for the LTSP.org website as they don't have much in the way of using Macs as thin clients. These are either 66 or 80 mhz PPC 601, Nu-Bus based Macs, hence the limitation to mkLinux and not LinuxPPC. Also I think they take 72 pin EDO. At some point Apple, in their infinite wisdom switched to 168 pin EDO, which a bitch to find. Ziegler's book was the only firewalling book that made sense to me as a newbie 1+ years ago when I was trying to get an IPChains firewall installed on a DSL connected RH7 box. Just noticed this last week that the 2nd edition is out as of Oct 2001, which, while I haven't seen it yet, it is supposed to be updated for IPTables.
