I believe the card is telling you that it has been able to touch base with the network and the two of them have agreed to use 100 mb. When Charter came, I provided my notebook running win98 for them to use to confirm the connection worked and then, the moment they went out the door, I disconnected the notebook and switche the cable modem to each of her computers and confirmed they both worked. Then I tried the router and lost the connection. A trip to the website of the cable modem manufacturer indicated a related model liked a crossover ethernet cable between the modem and a router. There is no guaranteed way of doing this from the OS since each driver is different (kind of annoying). You can look at mii-tool which should be able to get/set the network settings if the driver supports it. Otherwise it's dmesg or another driver specific method. If you just want to know the speed, your card may have a 10/100 mbit LED/set of LEDs on the back which will tell you. (My Kingston KNE111's at home have "100mbit" and "Full Duplex" LEDs, which will handle the 4 possibilities. If the speed is mismatched, you won't be on the network at all. If the duplex is mismatched, you'll just get bad performance when doing certain operations (namely quick read/writes). You can determine this (usually) via "netstat -in" and looking for I/O errors and collisions on a FD network. > If anyone can help or has similar experience, please give me a shout. Got a quick question... Other than looking in dmesg for what the driver reported the speed of the cable of the network device, does anybody know what utility or place in /proc that'll tell you what the speed of the cable connected to your machine is. Thanks, Tim.

I've seen some outages -- the recent thunderstorms put them off the air for over a day, but I'm not running anything mission critical. I really like the bandwidth. Their support is another matter. They rarely respond to email, and then after a couple of days. Their frontline support is clueless. They claimed one problem was because my email address was case sensitive. It wasn't (I tested), and when I informed them of that fact, their email communication stopped. They like you to call their phone line rather than use email, but the wait on the line is inexcusable. They claim that the wait is short, but I've never experience a short wait. Bill

Hi, I've had Charter for almost a year and have had no problems. Except my modem going last month.. that was the first real big problem. Like any ISP.. they have had a few outages here in Auburn, but they didn't last more than 2 hours. I had no problems getting my Linux (Mandrake)system working with it. Problem with network card

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack.
