sound module?

I got a new (old) machine, and I'm having problems getting the sound card working. The machine is a DELL Optiplex GX1, and the sound card is built into the mother board. I can't see anything on the motherboard that tells me what kind of sound card is there. I can't even find anything about the motherboard other than it's Dell. There are messages in my system log: Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 I get these messages at boot and whenever I put a music CD in the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

I posted the problem below, and I finally found out what was wrong with my lpd setup -- nothing! The entire problem was a setup on the W98 settings for the driver. All I had to do was disable bi-directional support for the printer. (I think it was enabled because I have a scanner head for the printer.) Just thought the group might like to know. Hi Gerrald! There is nothing special you need do. I have a laptop running RH7.1 and am using a "cable modem" (Surf Board) in Shrewsbury. I also have a home network, but that doean't make any difference - you either configure the router or the PC to talk to the cable modem. Assuming you have DHCP (i.e., you do not have a static IP assigned), you should be able to simply configure your ethernet interface and plug it into the cable modem. There is a good chance eth0 is already setup if you installed RH onto the laptop with the nic card already installed. You can use Linuxconf to set up eth0 for dhcp and that is about it (use the masks given to you by the cable company, as well as DNS settings, etc.). Of course, you might want to consider putting a firewall between you and the rest of the world because when you plug your PC directly into a cable modem, the anyone on that system can now see you computer... If Charter Pipeline uses DHCP, all you have to do is type netconf as root, go to Host name and IP network devices, and set Adaptor 1 (eth0) to Enabled and Dhcp.
