My primary mechanical keyboard that I've been using for a while is starting to go a little flakey on me, even after a few rounds of cleaning, so I'm looking to finally replace it. I'm looking for something: - With fully mechanical keys (replaceable switches would be a nice bonus) - Ergonomic layout, which these days seems to primarily mean a split design - Illuminated keycaps would be preferred Anyone have good recommendations they can share? -- - Frank
Don't go too deep into the world of ergo keyboards... People take it very seriously. My immediate recommendations are either a Moonlander or Ergodox. I haven't used either personally, but I've heard good things about them. Yeah, I think my favorite out there one so far is this one that requires side view mirrors to learn to use it properly: https://www.allthingsergo.com/safetype-keyboard/ I've also avoided most of the kit ones, simply because I just don't have the time these days to do that much soldering. The Ergodox does seem like it fits the bill, even if it's on the pricier side, so I may just go with that one if nothing better appears. thanks! I really like my Keychron v1 75% (function keys but no numpad). https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v1-qmk-via-custom-mechanical-keyboard?variant=40026442530905¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAjwkLCkBhA9EiwAka9QRpBVJhr1H_sF0g64duaIlQemKSlod8tPffFKk8yQUCTGvOC31Pn8OxoCt5gQAvD_BwE It's good a really heavy aluminum base, hot swap keys, and replaceable caps. Keeb dorkdom is a REALLY deep rabbit hole as has already been said, but with something like this you get a very useful keyboard that you can build on later should you desire. My two favorite keyboards are as follows: 1. Microsoft/Logitech Ergo keyboards. I've got a couple of these. I do like that out of the box Ubuntu fully supports the macro keys. 2. Kinesis Advantage 2. This keyboard took a bit for me to be comfortable using: https://www.amazon.com/Kinesis-Advantage2-Ergonomic-Keyboard-KB600LFQ Thanks, Tim. I've got a pair of WASDkeyboards 'CODE' keyboards. I wish the keycaps were doubleshot for more durability, but I've been driving these for a number of years now without any problems. These are TKL boards, not split, but I find that they are ergonomic enough for me. Also, these use the 'clear' stems from CherryMX, which means they're not super loud or clicky. But people would still complain about how loud they are on some conf calls at times. :-) Now that I work from home mostly (99% of the time) I don't help other user's as much so maybe I should go down the ergonomic rathole and get something really funky. But having to them move to a laptop and other machines in the house makes me pause. Plus I'd then want to get TWO new keyboards so I have a primary and a spare for when I needed it.
Thanks, I'll check them out! On Mon, Jun 19, 2023, 3:01 PM John Stoffel <john@stoffel.org> wrote:

I’m sure you’ve already looked; TrulyErgononic Cleave is my daily driver. It’s super comfy; I’m trying to see if I have a coupon since iirc they sent an email that they’re stopping production. https://trulyergonomic.com/ergonomic-keyboards/mechanical-keyboards/products... Eric

I've tried the microsoft sculpt, split keyboards including the kinesis freestyle and the ultimate hacking keyboard, and the kinesis advantage (and the older classic). The kinesis advantage/classic is by far the best for me--nothing else even comes close. I've been using that keyboard for at least the past 15 years. Keyboards are a personal decision, though. I have a couple you could try out if you want to borrow them--the kinesis classic (ps2 connector required) and the kinesis freestyle, with the tenting accessory (for vertical typing). Good luck with your hunt! -Jeff

It's an interesting idea. I'd be happy bring one of mine at some point, but not until after then end of June.
What do people think of alternative keyboard layouts? I ask because a couple of my co-workers use "workman" https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kdeloach/workman/gh-pages/images/usage-viz... Tim. On Tue, Jun 20, 2023 at 4:43 PM John Stoffel via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

So my primary keyboard these days is one of the older TEK keyboards. They're still mostly QWERTY, but have moved a few of the special keys around, like enter and delete. Even these took some time to get used to, and a little more time to get used to switching back and forth with the typical layout on anything else. I'd have to see some pretty impressive improvements before I'd try to really put in the work to learn and switch between the whole alphabet. Besides, I find that the keyboard is rarely the bottleneck - I quite frequently can type faster than I can think, so typing faster wouldn't speed up my work at all! The TEK keyboard looks good and with familiar design. I thought at first you were talking about the brand I use: I currently have a TEX Shinobi, which has the trackpoint (like on Thinkpads) if you use those, as well as left click/right click/scroll. I like the size as well, which I find to be compact. My only real issues: I would choose switches other than browns (there is a DIY version which seems interesting) and the scroll button does not register as Mouse3. It is also maybe a bit pricey ________________________________ From: Frank Sweetser via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2023 2:16:56 PM To: Worcester Linux Users' Group General Discussion <wlug@lists.wlug.org> Cc: Tim Keller <turbofx@gmail.com>; Frank Sweetser <frank.sweetser@gmail.com> Subject: [EXT] [WLUG] Re: Keyboard recommendations So my primary keyboard these days is one of the older TEK keyboards.
