Recommendation for Project Management freeware?
Morning all! Before I download a few bazillian freeware apps to look at, I was wondering if anyone has experience with and a recommendation for a freeware alternative to MS Project? I would like both Gantt and PERT with critical path and milestones... This is primarily for keeping track of the flow and status of a bunch of projects (where are we, what comes next, what is holding up the works, etc.), and for tasks within a project. Drill down from a multiple project view (PERT) to a single project, to tasks with a project (Gantt) would be very cool, especially given senior management is visually oriented. ;-) Alternatives to "project management" apps based on the above are welcome (I'm not sure where the process automation/workflow tools business is these days, but if you have something you like, let me know...). Being able to generate web-based content would be brilliant! Then I could say "go to this URL and click away!" Thanks in advance! Steve

Have you considered a wiki? It won't autoproduce the fancy PERT and Gantt charts (though you can ASCII art them!), but otherwise works well for planning. I use Tomboy [1] for solo projects. This isn't really the same type of application I'm looking for - this is more like a to-do app... I'm looking for a tool that will generate project related info (the standard PERT, critical path, Gantt, etc.) based on some data. Thanks for the idea of a wiki though - I may be able to use that for something else! Steve On 6/20/07, Andre Lehovich <andrel@yahoo.com> wrote:

Have you tried "Planner"? I haven't not used it, yet. But I think it may worth having a look at. http://live.gnome.org/Planner baris

I think a did download a few bazillion apps trying to find something like this and I ended up with dot project which I've been using recently. It has a lot of options and it isn't always intuitive at first how to get it to do what you want, but it does everything that I need it to and seems to work well doing gantt charts and task lists between different projects. Also has all sorts of other options that I haven't used so all I can vouch for is the task planning and time tracking but it sounds like it might be what you're looking for. http://www.dotproject.net

Have you tried MrProject <http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/PLD/dists/ra/PLD/i686/PLD/RPMS/mrproject-0.5.1-1.i686.html>? I've used it for my projects. I think it works ok. Walt Stephen Daukas wrote:

It's apparently been taken up here: http://developer.imendio.com/projects/planner/ /m
Hello Walt, I tried Mr. Project several years ago when the project was in its infancy. It worked pretty well - minus the crashes ;). I decided to wait for it to stabilize, but forgot about it. Now I can only find package links - all the "home page" links on various sites are dead. Is Mr. Project still alive? -Adam On 6/20/07, Walt Sawyer <wsawyer@norfolk-county.com> wrote:
