Last night it was brought to my attention that Jitsi has decided to become more "zoom" like. That sucks. Moreover, and I've noticed this as well, their free instance's performance is all over the place.. some meetings the performance is spot on, other meetings, like last night, it was not so great. There should be zero barriers to people joining the meeting. To this end, I'm going to explore what it's going to take to stand up my own Jitsi instance. Likely hosted in some cloud provider with possibly a nice DNS entry. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
I didn't notice much of a performance issue with last night's meeting. If anything, the meetings are hard to follow from Jitsi now that most people are joining the meetings in-person but there isn't an agenda or some other signifier for what the topic is. The open-ended conversation format is fine, but doesn't always translate well for anyone joining virtually. One of the nice things about Jitsi Meet is that you can screenshare a slideshow for people to follow, but that doesn't seem to be leveraged. That being said, I would be all for a self-hosted Jitsi! Joining a meeting would be really convenient if it was as simple as clicking on: https://meet.wlug.org - Josh On Fri, Oct 13, 2023 at 11:19 AM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

I hear you on the "no agenda" issue. I want to get back to having a defined topic and actually doing a presentation and then moving onto the general conversation. I think many people when they don't see we have a topic, decide not to come. I'm proposing for the next meeting that I do a talk on the useability of the pi5. I'm going to buy one as soon as it comes out and start mucking with it. I'm actually thinking what I might try to do is make it my daily driver at home and see how that goes. Do people like that idea, think it's terrible? Let me know. Thanks, Tim. On Fri, Oct 13, 2023 at 12:09 PM Joshua Stone <joshua.gage.stone@gmail.com> wrote:

I've been hearing if you haven't already ordered a PI 5 then you won't get one until the 3rd production batch. Unless you can find a store that bought for their own stock and they haven't sold out yet. Also, the PI 5 specs are a mix of good and bad. Good performance, bad cooling, and lack of hardware decoding for a bunch of video types. On Fri, Oct 13, 2023, 2:17 PM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

Microcenter is showing them available on Oct. 23rd. My plan was to drive there directly before going to work and just be waiting at the door and buy one. Yeah, watching some video's I see the same stuff.. that starting with the pi4, you need active cooling.. which saddens me a bit. I'm using one to drive my 3d printer, and at this point the pi4 with the fan is louder than the printer.. Tim. On Fri, Oct 13, 2023 at 2:46 PM Joe Sherman <joesherman1979@gmail.com> wrote:

I very much like the proposed Pi5 topic. Joel On October 13, 2023 3:24:23 PM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

This might be old news and off the Raspberry 5 topic. I have been looking at the Zimma Board for a SBC to mess with. It is a different type of board for a different use case. I am mostly focused on the performance and SATA port(s). I do not like burning out SD cards. Possible uses: 1) open media vault 2 drive NAS 2) Low end (low power, low budget) web page server 3) pihole with a firewall (x86 build) I would like to know if anyone has an opinion on this board.

I have a couple of OrangePi3 LTS boards and I could bring one to compare with the RPi5

How well would this board work to use to build a home ceph cluster? I used to think I wanted to get a bunch of Odriod H2 with the SATA ports and setup my own distributed filesystem.

I tried doing this myself once, but in a VM and it was terrible. They are *so* tied into the RPi for setup and install that it's not funny. John
https://hackaday.io/project/175094-raspberry-pi-ceph-cluster It's definitely a situation where you'd really want your ansible skills dialed in. On Tue, Oct 17, 2023, 12:43 PM John Stoffel <john@stoffel.org> wrote:
