Hey Gang, Does any one use Signal? Wondering if anyone has and thoughts on it good or bad. I'm trying to decide if I should install or not. Ron
I've been using it daily since ~2014. On Android it acts as my default SMS application. It does what it says on the tin, and it's kept up with adding features to be on par with other messaging applications. Hi Ron, I can’t recommend it enough. I work for a Cybersecurity company as an analyst, and the senior staff in my group have a signal chat for out of band / backup communications. I recommend to everybody to use it for out of band, since if your email is compromised it is a bad idea to discuss that compromise with your coworkers over email. It’s also great to have secure cross platform communications. I do not have an android phone, yet I can securely chat with my friends who do. If I recall correctly, it’s using PGP under the hood to encrypt and sign messages. Eric

Do you allow it access to your contacts/ are you comfortable with that? On 5/1/22 08:11, Logan Brown via WLUG wrote:

Yes, I’m ok with that. Their privacy policy says they don’t collect info https://signal.org/legal/ and it’s open source: https://github.com/signalapp Also Bruce Schneier and Edward Snowden like it. Eric

My friends and I use Signal as a replacement for SMS/MMS. It works very well for the following reasons: - E2E encryption is baked-in for text messages, voice calls, and video calls - Has an excellent security track record and is recommended by various security experts - Supports arbitrary file attachment types like PDF - Has very good video attachment quality - Works over wi-fi automatically, which is especially important for avoiding roaming data usage while traveling internationally - Has message replies and reactions - Groups can be shared via URLs: WLUG group - https://signal.group/#CjQKIB4V_icJ7j26US0jRIAZoQtCbNXPk5LAm9qSyKGOhiEBEhBbDl... As far as chat platforms are concerned, it has a very good balance of usability and security. I wholly recommend it for anyone trying to move away from SMS/MMS. - Josh On Sun, May 1, 2022 at 7:08 PM Eric Martin via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:
