hi all, I am trying to configure cups 1.1.14 on slackware 8 to print on a printer connected to the router(siemens speedstream 2614). Well, that's a good question. It's a router with a printer port, or a networked printer "naturally"). Either way, cups should be able to see any printer on the the network. I'm thinking that printing directly to a network socket would work, at least tha't what I did with networked printers where I used to work. My sugguestion is this, and I know is a total cop-out, get KUPS and do a network scan to look for printers. If it's on the network. Cups should be seeing it. thanks for the reply. yes router has a printer port on it. I just compiled kups, selected socket, and did a network scan(192.168.254.0-192.168.254.255 on port 515). kups did find one on 192.168.254.254 which is the router. then I selected the printer configuration. But still does not print a test page? any ideas? baris On 15 Mar 2002 15:12:29 -0500 Wesley Allen <wallen@charter.net> wrote:

Hi, there's a error_log, and access_log, (probably in /var/log/cups/). That might lead to a solution. If you want to get more info out of the logs you can change the vebosity in cups.conf. When i configured cups, i just used the web interface, and that worked very well, perhaps that might be worth looking at (http://printer_server:631/). I have a laserjet IIP connected to the first port/queue "L1" of a standalone Linksys printserver (Model EPSX3). In my /etc/hosts file I have a line 192.168.7.55 printserver.localdomain printserver In my /etc/cups/printers.conf file I have </Printer> <DefaultPrinter lp> Info lj2p Location DeviceURI lpd://printserver/L1 State Idle Accepting Yes JobSheets </Printer> In that fifth line, printserver refers to that dotted quad defined in /etc/hosts. The lpd: would appear to me to tell you what cups likes to see. I suspect you should then be able to replace the //printserver by the equivalent for your router. (That L1 is just how that linksys box distinguishes the first printer queue from the other two.) doug
I used this lpd://192.168.254.254/LPT1 the only trick is to find out the queue name which is not mentioned in the user's manual of speedstream. Siemens says their router IS compatible with unix however they do not support it. So I had to guess for it. Going after doug's example I tried couple of queue names like L1, queue, lp0, etc... could not succeed. I thought of examining the port driver software for dos. In the properties window of the port driver I saw that it is somehow using lpt1 port. then I realized that lpt1 should be the name of the printer port on the router. So tried to use LPT1 as the name of the queue. and it worked. thanks to all help! baris On Fri, 15 Mar 2002 15:04:05 -0500 Baris Hasdemir <tekir99@yahoo.com> wrote:
