Using XF86Setup, I was able to install the XF86_3DLabs server (the right one) and can now get as far as the KDE desktop starting to open. It hangs when it's checking peripherals. Does that mean that some hardware is not set up properly, and if so, how do I find out which it is?
Many thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I suspect that KDE performance will stink on a P166. You never mentioned how much memory lives in your system. KDE and Gnome seem to require alot of it (>32 MB) in my experience. Might I suggest that if you are memory limited that you try a lighter weight window manager such as icewm, blackbox, or any of the fvwm variants? On SuSE, you can type "wmlist" to see all of the window mangers installed. Then, to start a particular window manager, type: startx fvwm2 substituting your favorite window manager in place of fvwm2 above.
