Seems too crude ... and there must be some file "upstream" that would lead to 'me' being left off in the first place ??

i dont use ubuntu myself, but i imagine that whatever utility you use to add yourself to the proper groups, they'd all be frontends to editing /etc/group anyways as for not being in the groups in the first place, that would be traced back to how your user was created in the first place -mike
