WLUG Meeting TONIGHT Wed Nov 14th

Hi Everybody, Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend this evening's WLUG meeting due to a rotten cold and a low grade fever which I seem to have picked up somewhere. I would encourage all of you to meet this evening, and some brave soul who has been in WLUG for a long time can get up and run the meeting in my absence. Have a beer for me at the Boynton! Here is what I had planned to report to the group this evening. I would like somebody to read this to the group in case folks haven't checked their e-mail before the meeting. 1) WLUG financials I have consolidated the accounts so that all of the WLUG money is in an account at the Lowell Five bank in Chelmsford, MA. I just paid the $50 fee to join the Boston User Groups as was voted at a previous WLUG meeting, and I wrote myself a $75 check for refreshments for the calendar year 2001. That leaves us with approx. $575.00 in the bank, which has been raised through your donations as well as install fest proceeds. 2) Annual Linux Showcase This event was not attended nearly as well as in past years, due in part to the fear of flying and by the fact that many computer people have been recently laid off. There were only half as many vendors as in the past, again due to the economy, I suspect. I found the quality of the techinical talks to be very good. I heard talk that there wouldn't be an ALS next year, but that Maddog was pushing for a small number of more local conferences, perhaps one in Boston. Some cool things which I saw at ALS: a) Linux running on a Compaq iPAQ, one running X and an xterm, the other running Qt Embedded with a bunch of PDA like applications. Refer to http://www.handhelds.org for more information. b) Latest versions of Gnome and KDE in action c) A large number of kernel hackers (including Linus) on one room d) A cluster of small embedded computers built by Los Alamos National Labs, all running Linux out of FLASH memory. e) A great beer selection at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company I personally spoke to Jim Gettys and a representative from the Free Software Foundation (I think his name was Brad, but I have his card). I might be able to get one or both of these folks to come to WLUG to give a talk in the future. I guess I'll have to save the freebies until next month. See ya later, and have a great meeting! Linux Showcase and upcoming WLUG meeting

Kevin writes: "Recent experience with the rapidly spreading and highly destructive Nimda and SirCam worms has demonstrated the ease with which a harmful "payload" can slip in to many otherwise secure networks via Email. I will open by having a sacrificial laptop with IE 5.5 SP1 and Outlook 2K SP1. I will connect to a server and receive my e-mail messages, then watch as my poor computer becomes infected with as many different viruses and worms as I can cram in before it dies. Then we will follow the process (on another system) of how the attack got from the (possibly) clueless sender to the clueless recipient. We will review how the mail travels from your desktop to the recipient - through local, corporate, and Internet servers. We will pay particular attention to attachments - how they are attached, transmitted, and delivered (and we will break the silence surrounding MIME). Finally, we will look at some specific examples of vulnerabilities and how they can be reduced." OK, so in addition to being an incredibly timely and popular topic, what else is different? Because it will be highly publicized to the user group community and we will be expecting a higher than usual turnout, registration will be required for this meeting. Nice meeting you tonight, Chuck, and THANKS for the redhat cd's... sec was the freeware event correlation tool I spoke of tonight: It is a straightforward perl script and doesn't implement a full state machine, but it nevertheless provides some inklings of what more complciated event correlators do. Check it at http://kodu.neti.ee/~risto/sec/ The best commercial event corellation tools IMHO are Nervecenter, Taave, Smarts, and Netcool. Each has its niche where it's best in class, and there are others, like HP's ECS, Logec, G2, etc. My friend Doug Stevenson is a specialist in event correlation and wrote the Maji spec: the open source event correlation engine being developed under the umbrella of OpenNMS (yeah, so, it'll be java - but it will also be very feature rich). Just press enter at the initial boot prompt to get the option at the top of that first screen -- install/upgrade. When asked for installation method pick FTP. If your box normally uses DHCP pick that on the next screen, otherwise (my case) enter its IP dotted quad etc. When asked for the source, again use 130.215.24.5 and use /pub/mirrors/redhat/linux/7.1/os/i386 for the directory. (do not check use non-anonymous FTP) The Red Hat process will take over from there. You will see lots of activity on the ethernet card lights as the ramdisk stuff is downloaded. This tells you that you got things right up to this point! :-) A couple of screens later you get to pick the class of install. You would want Upgrade.
