New meeting schedule posted

HI all, Please check the recently updated WLUG website for the meeting schedule for the next 12 months or so. Note that we'll be having our annual WLUG BBQ at Doug Waud's house on Wednesday, July 21 (weather permitting). More details forthcoming. I'm still seeing a volunteer to run the June meeting with some topic of interest. Otherwise, I'll have to cram and give a presentation about the bootsplash software, which would be tough for me to demo since VMware doesn't work on SuSE 9.1 (yet). Here are a few ideas I've been mulling over, some applicable for now, some for later. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses. Trolling for topics for the June meeting

HI everybody, The summer months always make it tough to draw people to a WLUG meeting, and announcing a meeting without sufficient notice makes it worse. Thus, I'll start the monthly troll for topics now in the hope that we can nail down this month's topic and advertise the meeting so that we'll have a pretty good turnout. If you have topics on which you would like to address WLUG, please let me know. FYI: I'm fabricating the schedule for upcoming meetings. It should be posted shortly. FYI: I'm currently negotiating the time and place for the annual WLUG BBQ to be held in July. More news coming soon. Stay tuned! GNHLUG quarterly meeting to be held at USENIX Technical Conference

Hi, I have been thinking about having the quarterly meeting of GNHLUG down in Boston at the USENIX Technical conference. This meeting would not only be open to all members of GNHLUG, but also members of BLU (the Boston Linux User's group, www.blu.org) and the Worcester Linux User's Group (www.wlug.org). I have contacted USENIX and they have a room for us on Thursday, July 1st from 7-9 P.M. EDT. Later that evening Ted Ts'o and I will be leading a more formal Linux BoF from 9-11. Both meetings will be at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. Reminder: Upcoming WLUG Meeting

Hi Everybody, Its that time again...time for our monthly WLUG meeting, which will be on Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 PM in the usual place (see website for directions). At this meeting, our own Tim Keller will give a talk which he describes thus: ---start Tim--- Here's the title. Creating and Rendering 3D Objects in Linux using OSS tools. Here's the blurb. I'll be giving a general talk about some of the open source tools that are currently available on linux and using them to create 3D objects, scenes and animations. I'll show the pros, cons, cool features and short comings of these non commercial products. ---end Tim--- After the meeting, we'll go out for food & drink.
