As there is currently (AFAIK) no topic for the next
Wednesday's WLUG meeting, I'd like to propose the
possibility of a kinda sorta swap meet.
I'm probably not the only person with an assortment of PC
parts of dubious value. However one man's trash is
another's treasure.
Perhaps interested parties could bring their old parts to
the meeting for possible exchange for someone else's. Is
this practical, feasible, desireable or not a good idea at
all?

I have an Abit BX6r2 that I no longer use. I was running a Celeron 566
(nominally 66Mhz FSB) at a 100Mhz. A P3 850 uses the same multiplier, so it
will run on this board.
It's also a great overclocking board. You won't get that with an Intel.
I can bring it to the next meeting and you can test drive it first. If
you're interested, I'll let it go cheap.

offering a swap for a SECC2 PIII running at 550 or 600.
I am also now looking to see if anyone knows of a local source for a
motherboard capable of running a Slot 1 PIIIs at 850. This is older
technology (Intel no longer make Slot 1), so I need to see what I can find
that is already in the distribution channel.
I really like Intel boards, so Intel would be my first choice. Anyone know
of a local source, Intel or otherwise?

The PIII chips are fixed clocks, you can't change the multiplier on
them (like you could on the celerons). At least that's what I
remember.
As for a trade, I've got a suspect motherboard with a pair of PIII
450s (or so, I can't remember right now) that I'd be willing to
sell/trade.
I think the only thing I sorta maybe looking for is a really good
sound card to use with Linux. My DELL Precision 610MT (dual PIII Xeon
550) has a crappy builtin sound card (which I can't get to work with
ALSA) and I'm not happy with the Avance ALS4000 card I have either.
I'll try to make the next thursday night meeting and bring stuff for
trade/sell.

I suspect this depends upon the distro. I recently upgraded my gateway
box from SuSE 6.3 to SuSE 7.2 and found that the default "Personal
Firewall" was exactly what I wanted. (I just use the web for browsing
and email so all my connections are started by me and so can easily be
"masqueraded" --- hidden from the web). It seems to give you
essentially
the same thing as that Linksys box Steven Daukas (is that a real name?)
suggested --- basically masquerading stuff coming from within and
blocking
anything unrelated from outside.
Again, setting up the nic's is the same with all distros if you approach
at the under the hood level but will differ if you use their
administrative
tools since the latter again are distro dependent. In the SuSE case,

Network Manual, pp 149 guides you through reasonably painlessly while
still
providing some idea of what is going on.
Now, all bets are off if you want to provide some service like a web
site
or ftp server because then you have to do more than just masquerading
and
that does require you to become more familiar with how a firewall works.
As to the two nics, basically you will set up one, say eth0, which is
connected
to your cable/dsl modem as a dhcp client which will get its ip address
from
the isp (I assume that, since you are asking a basic question, you did
not
spring for a fixed ip address which is more expensive; I also assume
that you
have a broadband connection since you specify two nics). The other nic,
say eth1, you set up with a fixed IP address on your local net, for
example,
192.168.1.1.
If, at this point, your head is swimming, you can either
look at the slides from an old WLUG presentation on networking
(go to WLUG site, find "Past meeting information" and go to
the March 2001, stuff. Slides 47 and 48 give a back to basics
summary of the difference between a hub and a switch incidentally)
or look into the manual(s) that come with your distro and see if they
are as useful as those for SuSE
or, get back to me (I suggest directly so we do not clutter the WLUG
mail list more than I have been doing lately :-) ) and I am quite
willing to try to walk you through the process on a slower one-on-one
step-by-step process. The hazards here are that (1) I can easily get in
over my head (but, I believe, am willing at least to let you know
when that happens) and (2) you may end up wishing as in the Tom
Lehrer song "You should never have let me begin ... " :-)

While I think having an ISO image for download would be a good idea, a
general download area where folks can post items of interest, say from one
of the WLUGs, might be a better idea. That way, if someone has items that
have been discussed in either a meeting or on the mailing list, then they
can put it somewhere for others to grab.
Of course, there is the perennial problem of making sure this isn't used
for illicit materials and/or that the site isn't swamped, but there are
many ways to manage that. Most companies have an area for this sort of
thing and I'll bet we could come up with a solution as well.
Too bad I can't make the next meeting, but I'll bet a good discussion over
pizza and beer might yield some good ideas!

P.S. I'm just in the process of building a new RH server machine for
myself and my domains. I plan on having such a download area and would be
interested in being educated as to the pros and cons of that sort of
service. I had thought about putting Linux stuff in there, so maybe there
is a potential fit with WLUG?
