Re: We've got a Meeting on January 9th! Usual Spot, Topic: Possibly TBD

by Joshua Stone

Hey all, I hope everyone had a great time over the holidays! I certainly did! I'm also happy to hear that the presentation was so well received (easily the longest talk I've held so far!) and there is interest in doing it again! I know that some couldn't attend the December meeting, and I recall we had to cut the meeting short before we could do a demo of drawing on a Wacom drawing tablet with Krita. If there are enough people interested in seeing my presentation again I could see if I can attend tomorrow, otherwise I could plan for February instead which will give me time to refine my material as well as give more people a chance to attend. -Josh On Tue, Jan 7, 2020, 22:23 Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Hey Gang, > > I hope you all had a great holidays and a happy new year! Argh! I meant to join last night but forgot. I've been working on a new project if people are interested. It is called Gamerzilla. Re: Reminder! Meeting tomorrow! Topic: Jack Friment from PIRG, Right to Repair!

by Tim Keller

Awesome!! I just went to staples and bought a 10 pack of 16GB usb drives.. What are peoples opinions on what should go on them? I was thinking of making 7 out of the 10 Ventoy with an assortment of ISO's and the last three I thought I might do as bare ISO installs for stuff that doesn't like ventoy. Here's what I was thinking of putting on each Ventoy drive: Ubuntu 25 Fedora 42 Arch 2025.10.01 I know asking what your favorite distro is throwing a flare into a gasoline factory.. but feel free to let me have your unfettered opinion ;-) Tim. Tim, Another newbie request. Tomorrow night can you spend a few minutes talking about running Windows apps on Linux, i.e., Wine and virtual machines (my impression is VirtualBox seem to be the most popular). Last month the issue of ransomware came up and the consensus was there is none on Linux. In my wanderings around the web I came across Linux.Encoder as Linux ransomware: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux.Encoder.1 Thanks, Al On 03/06/2017 08:55 PM, Tim Keller wrote: > Hey Gang, > > This is a reminder that we've got a meeting March 9th, 2017! > Location: Campus Center Rm 301 (Hagglund Room) > Topic: To Be Decided! > > Honestly, this meeting kind of crept up on me! Re: WLUG Meeting tonight?

I've found that moving my systems to Fedora Atomic has been great for avoiding situations like this. The image-based OS update model of rpm-ostree ensures that an update doesn't leave the OS in a broken state, even if the update gets interrupted. https://coreos.github.io/rpm-ostree/ https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/silverblue/ The introduction of bootupd in Fedora 41 has also helped ensure that the bootloader gets updated properly outside of rpm-ostree. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FedoraSilverblueBootupd In essence, I get the leading-edge package updates of Fedora, with the rock-solid reliability that LTS distros are typically associated with. - Josh On Thu, Jan 9, 2025 at 8:15 PM Chuck Anderson via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Fedora is always up-to-date with the newest kernels... > > On Thu, Jan 09, 2025 at 08:09:16PM -0500, Tim Keller via WLUG wrote: > > Chuck, > > > > That's awesome! 1.4-rc1 has stage{1,2,3} builds for i{3,5,6}86, built with athlon/p4/p3 optimizations. they also have sparc/ppc/alpha stages{1,2,3} pre-made too once you have a working stage3 installation, you're done 'installing' gentoo. of course if you want more than a bare system you're gonna install more stuff, but stage3 is as far as you're gonna get from gentoo ... everything after that is up to you -mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keller, Tim" <Tim.Keller(a)stratus.com> To: <wlug(a)mail.wlug.org> Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 11:20 Subject: RE: [Wlug] REMINDER: Meeting Wed 18-sept-2002 7:00 PM > I thought this was supposed to be a one night install fest... Debian Squeeze is very nice. Everything Works. The spacefun wallpaper & splash screen is pretty goofy, but they're easily replacable, & easily forgotten. I custom-install Firefox on all my Debian installations. Also note: I did not install KDE on my latest Squeeze, since I didn't want KDE4. Have xfce & KDE-trinity as choices of graphical environments. Hi Tim, As you might remember, I attended several WLUG meetings when they were virtual. I read a recent email that led me to believe there is still a way for me t attend virtually. Is that true? If so. I will try attend some future meetings. Also, here is question that maybe you or someone in WLUG can help me with. My computer runs (for now, don't ask why) Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. A financial institution says I must run a virus scan very soon. I installed clamav and then ran freshclam. As far as I can tell, freshclam has been running for 15 hours, and is still running. Is that typical etc.? Thanks. George Caplan P.S. Here is some blatant self-promotion which doubles as recruiting info for UPchieve, which especially needs Physics and CS coaches (tutors). It also explains why I am too busy to update my OS ... for now.
