Re: [Wlug] Trolling for topics for the June meeting

by frank p

Here are a few ideas I've been mulling over, some applicable for now, some for later. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses. Re: [Wlug] Reminder: WLUG Meeting Wednesday May 12 7PM

by James Gray

As you might expect WPI has directions available online. http://www.wpi.edu/about/visitors/directions.html http://www.wpi.edu/about/visitors/campusmap.html I've parked several different WPI parking lots and never received any sort of ticket during the evening. (I did get one when I came to hear RMS speak, which was during the day). We usually meet in building H (Morgan Hall) on the campus map. There is a field up and to the right of that building on the map you can see it is criss-crossed by walk ways. There are parking spaces along the perimeter of this field. I usually park here there are usually a few free spaces. Has anyone messed with Peertube? https://joinpeertube.org/en/home/ I don't remember if it's strictly Linux-related, but I heard about it on a Linux podcast and it sounds interesting. I agree. Put up the topic, as Doug suggested, and run with it. I should think a quick run through the year's Linux Journal, and others, would make for a good framework for the evening. Of course, anyone could always add what they did/know/heard about, etc... doug waud wrote: > Hi all > >> Chips and Dip? ;-) >> >> You know, this triggered an idea. > > > I am not going to ask for details there! :-) > >> Every year, before the end of the calendar year, >> you see these TV shows which summarize the news from the past 12 >> months. Topics for upcoming meetings..

by Tim Keller

I've got some updates and ideas for the upcoming meetings! I've reached out to Daniel Moghimi about doing a talk regarding his work on the various security issues he's found in modern CPUs. He's agreed to speak either March or April. I'll work to finalize the details with him. I'm definitely interested in doing a Keysigning party, we'll just have to work out the logistics and what additional presentations that we'd like to go along with it. I know a while a go Eric Martin showed off a cool keyfob that had his key stored in it. I recently stumbled across a cool technology called "Node Red" which people are using to do automation stuff with IoT and MTQQ. https://www.nodered.org It allows you to create flows using their graphing engine. Another piece of software that people might find interesting is subsonic <http://www.subsonic.org/>. It lets you run your own music streaming service. This way you're not subjected to whatever algorithm spotify / pandora / etc wants to subject you to! I recently helped a buddy build a home nas to run it and it's pretty damn slick. Let me know if you have any more ideas for meeting topics! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
