0. Thanks for the birthday wishes! My wife has pointed out that I've been involved in WLUG for more than half my adult life at this point! 1. As for the dinner location, I have no idea, it's a surprise! 2. I'm totally down for having an in person meeting, we'd just have to find a venue. The Hudson library worked really well, I'd be cool for that, of other places are more central to others, we can figure something out. Please propose locations and we'll figure out what works. I'm also not opposed to having a rotating set of locations as long as it doesn't become too confusing. 3. TrueNas Scale does look cool. There's talk of putting gluster on to of ZFS for scale out storage, which slightly distresses me. I played with gluster back in the day and was rather unimpressed with it, maybe it's matured a bit) but last week poking at FreeBSD on a VM got me thinking about TrueNAS and it's partner project TrueNAS Scale (which is a debian based version of TrueNAS that supports containers, KVM, etc. 4. I was given a Raspberry Pi Zero as a gift. Apparently there's a tiny unix you can run on it! Later, Tim. Here are a few ideas I've been mulling over, some applicable for now, some for later. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses. As you might expect WPI has directions available online. http://www.wpi.edu/about/visitors/directions.html http://www.wpi.edu/about/visitors/campusmap.html I've parked several different WPI parking lots and never received any sort of ticket during the evening. (I did get one when I came to hear RMS speak, which was during the day). We usually meet in building H (Morgan Hall) on the campus map. There is a field up and to the right of that building on the map you can see it is criss-crossed by walk ways. There are parking spaces along the perimeter of this field. I usually park here there are usually a few free spaces. I agree. Put up the topic, as Doug suggested, and run with it. I should think a quick run through the year's Linux Journal, and others, would make for a good framework for the evening.
