I've got some updates and ideas for the upcoming meetings! I've reached out to Daniel Moghimi about doing a talk regarding his work on the various security issues he's found in modern CPUs. He's agreed to speak either March or April. I'll work to finalize the details with him. I'm definitely interested in doing a Keysigning party, we'll just have to work out the logistics and what additional presentations that we'd like to go along with it. I know a while a go Eric Martin showed off a cool keyfob that had his key stored in it. I recently stumbled across a cool technology called "Node Red" which people are using to do automation stuff with IoT and MTQQ. https://www.nodered.org It allows you to create flows using their graphing engine. Another piece of software that people might find interesting is subsonic <http://www.subsonic.org/>. It lets you run your own music streaming service. This way you're not subjected to whatever algorithm spotify / pandora / etc wants to subject you to! I recently helped a buddy build a home nas to run it and it's pretty damn slick. Hey all, I hope everyone had a great time over the holidays! I certainly did! I'm also happy to hear that the presentation was so well received (easily the longest talk I've held so far!) and there is interest in doing it again! I know that some couldn't attend the December meeting, and I recall we had to cut the meeting short before we could do a demo of drawing on a Wacom drawing tablet with Krita. Tim, Another newbie request. Tomorrow night can you spend a few minutes talking about running Windows apps on Linux, i.e., Wine and virtual machines (my impression is VirtualBox seem to be the most popular). Last month the issue of ransomware came up and the consensus was there is none on Linux. I've found that moving my systems to Fedora Atomic has been great for avoiding situations like this. Debian Squeeze is very nice. Everything Works. The spacefun wallpaper & splash screen is pretty goofy, but they're easily replacable, & easily forgotten. I custom-install Firefox on all my Debian installations. Also note: I did not install KDE on my latest Squeeze, since I didn't want KDE4. Have xfce & KDE-trinity as choices of graphical environments. Hi Tim, As you might remember, I attended several WLUG meetings when they were virtual. I read a recent email that led me to believe there is still a way for me t attend virtually. Is that true? If so. I will try attend some future meetings. Also, here is question that maybe you or someone in WLUG can help me with. My computer runs (for now, don't ask why) Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. A financial institution says I must run a virus scan very soon. I installed clamav and then ran freshclam. As far as I can tell, freshclam has been running for 15 hours, and is still running.
