RE: [Wlug] REMINDER: Meeting Wed 18-sept-2002 7:00 PM

by Keller, Tim

Andy, Let me know what you'd like for CD's for the install-fest and the quantity and I'll get them produced. Also, I can get together a wlug-goodies cd with all the latest kernel/patches/etc. Tim. -----Original Message----- From: Andy Stewart [mailto:andystewart@attbi.com] Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 20:22 PM To: Worcester Linux Users' Group Subject: [Wlug] REMINDER: Meeting Wed 18-sept-2002 7:00 PM HI Everybody, My apologies for not sending this out sooner, but our meeting for Wednesday evening is going to take place at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus like usual. We won't be having the install fest since I didn't get off my butt and make the arrangements (sorry!). I hope to do that tomorrow for a potential install fest in 1-2 weeks. I'll say more about that on Wed evening (that'll put the pressure on me to get this done!). I'll bring my laptop and hope that the projector is available (Chuck, can you assist?). I had thought of doing a demo of the VideoLan client/server. Doug, would you like to volunteer to bring your laptop? We'll need a hub and some cables to build a network. I'll be sure to have the necesary tarballs to make this work, or you can download them yourself if you wish. I'll bring a DVD or two and we can try it out. I had thought of doing this "live" like we did one other time. In case Doug can't make the meeting, having another laptop or two present might be interesting. Although the VideoLan client is interesting, I think the ability to stream the video over the net is pretty neat. Take a look at this website for some background info. http://www.videolan.org/ See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org _______________________________________________ Wlug mailing list Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug

RE: [Wlug] Meeting Topic Discussion

by Haines, Charles Allen

I've used the firewall configurer in redhat, both lokkit and the one that comes with redhat. There really isn't much to them, but if no one else knows better than I, I'd be happy to show them. ================================================= | Chuck Haines | AIM: CyberGrex | | ECE Sys Admin | Yahoo: CyberGrex_27 | | GDC Developer | ICQ: 3707881 | ================================================= http://www.linux-xtreme.net -----Original Message----- From: Wes Allen [mailto:wallen@charter.net] Sent: Friday, December 06, 2002 10:27 PM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: Re: [Wlug] Meeting Topic Discussion I just might have to tell my wife I'm coming to this one.... I'd like to go, but it depends on whether or not I can get the time off from work. Are people planning to go, because I think we can get a group discount of some kind. I'll print the emails and bring them to the meeting so we can discuss it. I'll post the info to the list afterwards. See ya later, Andy

Re: [Wlug] another vote for a future meeting topic

by Ryan Caron

No, the install isn't the easiest thing to someone not familar with it, but the Gentoo documentation is quite good. The basic install (known as a stage 1 install) alone can take a fair amount of time since everything has to be compiled. However, you can save time by using what's called a stage 2 install where some of the basic install is precompiled. A stage 3 install is where the entire basic install is already compiled. We would not be able to complete a stage 1 or stage 2 install during a typical WLUG meeting and it is the kind of thing to let run overnight. If you are a laptop user you can download all the neccessary source files in advance and leave the meeting with the laptop still compiling. Otherwise, a constant, and preferably fast, network connection is required.
