REMINDER: Upcoming LAN Party !!

HI Everybody, The next WLUG meeting will be held this coming Wednesday, February 19th, 2003 in a different location. The meeting room will be AK233 (Atwater Kent room 233). Please refer to the Wlug Meetings...Directions link for directions to this room. The building is right next to Salisbury Labs on the WPI campus. Please note the earlier start time of 6:00 PM ! At this meeting, we'll be having a LAN party ! This is WLUG's first LAN party so I'm curious to see what people bring. You'll need to bring your network gear (hubs, switches, cables) and a laptop or desktop machine with networking enabled. We'll interconnect all of the machines to create one big WLUG LAN. I'll bring my PLIP cable for the masochists in the crowd. This network most likely will *not* have access to the Internet (but we'll see what we can do). On this LAN, all sorts of activities could take place, such as multiplayer games, network security scans, attempts to (non-destructively!) crack another persons system to teach them about their security weaknesses, and more. Its really up to all of you and your imaginations as to what we can do with this type of setup. I'll even entertain doing a couple of network based Linux installations if folks want that. If people need help configuring their systems for networking, that help will be available. I'll also be available to do a demonstration of VNC for those interested. The possibilities are really endless. Due to the amount of time to setup such a LAN and still have time to have fun with it, I've extended the time of the WLUG meeting from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (note earlier start time!). I haven't been to a WLUG meeting in ages. Is it still in the same building in the southwest corner of the quad? The floorplan link is dead, http://www.wpi.edu/Admin/CC/Floorplans/37678.htm Is there parking available in the West Street lot? Will there be WiFi and/or ethernet available for the Pis? Keyboard? Decades (199x-2010) before I found wlug/WPI/you!, I'd (rarely..road wimp, became too lazy,etc..) go to MIT/Cambridge for geek-meetings that a UNIX SysAdmin --> linux-lover might enjoy. I stopped attending their meetings decades ago, but I kept listening quietly to the "discuss" (primary email thread/list of BLU) that I think it morphed into: Boston Linux and Unix http://www.blu.org (trivia: "Announce" includes "Discuss" list, which I get in digest, so a dozen+week becomes sm handful per week. TMI,but see also http://www.blu.org/about_blu/ for a hint at BLU history + leaders. HEAR YE and cool/modern format(s): BLU Meetings, at least some like THIS WEEK's, allow you to --- ATTEND and be yourself? LIVE, with Jitsi, see below, or --- PEEP apparently live and/or later ? with YouTube Live Stream, also below. So this month/week's topic would be new-to-me! I think the mini-demo idea was a good way to go about it. It was offered to me last install-fest by my family and I were sick. As for this week, my wife and I are talking over my coming. I had promised her that she'd be able to go out with some friends that night in advance (cookie-swap) and while she insists that it's ok if I go to the wlug meeting instead I don't feel right reniging on that promise. So I might miss this AGAIN. ARRRRRGHHHH! Maybe this could be the January topic? I'd be interested to see anyone who's got a Zarus as well, how do you like it? I know I should just go to the site, but how was the last meeting? I was hoping to make this my first meeting but I ended up in a medical clinic with my 11 week old son instead (a 102.5 fever is NOT GOOD). He's doing well; I'm not. I'd like to come out, but I'd feel REALLY stupid coming to a BBQ for my first time; talk about bush league!
