Reminder! WLUG Meeting tomorrow!! Topics: pi5 nvme support, backups, general discussion

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting tomorrow, Thursday, August 14th, 2025 at 7PM! Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland Ave Worcester MA. Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA I'm sure we'll have our usual A/V antics.. Topic: pi5 nvme support, backups, round table. I recently had a hardware failure that exposed that my backup solution wasn't that great. This spurred me to get a solution for backups. With a trusty pi5 and some nvme's I've setup a "burp" backup server. I'll show off the pi5 with an nvme or dual nvme setup running Rasbian with ZFS and burp. Then from there I'm sure we'll stray into other topics and I expect the conversation to get lively. As usual, we'll head out for dinner afterwards and keep the conversation going. Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: [Wlug] Reminder: Upcoming Meeting Wed Oct 10th

by Tim Keller

Andy, The meeting went great. We had one new person show up and we showed off Fedora Core and (I think) Ubuntu. We also started an install on a laptop (but that was a bit rocky). Seven of us then ended up at the Goat's Head for Pizza. I do have to say, that place is MUCH nicer than usual place we have pizza. My vote is that we go back their next meeting! REMINDER: Meeting on Thursday, Feb 21st

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Our next meeting is this Thursday, Feb 21st, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Access Grid room on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA USA. I'll update the website when it comes back up. For some reason, I cannot access www.wlug.org at this time. There is currently no specified topic for this meeting. If somebody would like to address the group, please let me know. Otherwise, what I might do is bring in the Ubuntu 7.10/KDE4 CD and we can explore it together. I've only had a brief glimpse of it. Afterwards, we'll retire to a local pizza restaurant for pizzas, sodas, and great conversation on Linux and other related topics. See ya there! WLUG Meeting This Thursday (2/13/2025) @7PM Topic: JetKVM

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting this Thursday! Time: 7PM Date: 2/13/2025 Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland St. Worcester MA. Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Topic: JetKVM Long time WLUG Member John Stoffel is going to be demoing his JetKVM ( https://jetkvm.com/) It's a next generation KVM over IP that started as a kickstarter and is now a "real product". Fully hackable, this FOSS KVM has a bunch of neat features. As usual expect a lively conversation, a cool demo and our usual shenanigans. Afterwards we'll likely head off for dinner and keep the conversation going! I hope to see you all there! Later, Tim. P.S. It looks as though there is some snow predicted for earlier in the day. If the weather prediction changes and it looks like things are going to be dangerous, I'll let everybody know as soon as possible. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

I thought this was supposed to be a one night install fest... I would figure we'd need a weekend for a gentoo install ;-) j/k. I can definity do some gentoo CDs, I was thinking RH7.3 and possibly another distribution (like suse) let me know! We won't be having the install fest since I didn't get off my butt and make the arrangements (sorry!). I hope to do that tomorrow for a potential install fest in 1-2 weeks. I'll say more about that on Wed evening (that'll put the pressure on me to get this done!). I'll bring my laptop and hope that the projector is available (Chuck, can you assist?). I had thought of doing a demo of the VideoLan client/server. Doug, would you like to volunteer to bring your laptop? We'll need a hub and some cables to build a network. I'll be sure to have the necesary tarballs to make this work, or you can download them yourself if you wish. I'll bring a DVD or two and we can try it out. I had thought of doing this "live" like we did one other time. In case Doug can't make the meeting, having another laptop or two present might be interesting. Although the VideoLan client is interesting, I think the ability to stream the video over the net is pretty neat. Take a look at this website for some background info. http://www.videolan.org/ See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org _______________________________________________ Wlug mailing list Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug _______________________________________________ Wlug mailing list Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug _______________________________________________ Wlug mailing list Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug

But I do care _which_ was screwed up. I had decided to go on Wednesday, until I re-reviewed my email inbox. There are five messages in there that say "Wednesday" in the subject, including this: > Yup, I totally screwed up... > The meeting is on the 10th NOT the 11th!!! Nevertheless, I now think maybe Thursday is correct, because there is one message that says: > The meeting is Thursday, > December 11th @7pm in the usual place. I was hoping that my previous message would result in a definitive answer, but nothing came all day. Maybe it seems redundant, but make it two out of three and tell me again, please. It would help if the Web page were updated to mention Jon Hall, so it doesn't look like dead information forgotten since last year. -- Keith

Re: WLUG Meeting tonight?

by Dennis Payne

My Framework 16 has been great. I have not upgraded anything. Games I couldn't run before can be run perfectly fine. I did recently try "Return to Moria" and it did not run well. It is PS5 game not available for the PS4 so I suspect it just requires more power than the Framework 16 graphics can give. I'm not running machine learning code so that hasn't been an issue for me. Reminder! Meeting TONIGHT March 9th, 2017! Topics: KVM, Virtualized windows apps, Linux Mint!

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, First the important details! Location: Rm 331 (Hagglund Room) @ 7PM Topic: read below... Tonight we've got a meeting! After the last meeting a couple of people were asking me questions about KVM (Kernel based Virtual Machine). New member Al Reinhart asked me a question about the best ways to run windows apps on linux, either via wine or through KVM / Oracle Virtual Box. He also mentioned Linux.Encoder (the first linux ransomware) which I didn't even know exists. Long time member Doug Mildram also wrote me about Linux Mint. A distribution I know quite well! They'll be some conversation and we'll kick off an install and talk about it's merits as a greate distribution. As usual, there'll be refreshments and snacks and afterwards we'll head to Tech for pizza! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

How did this work? I used IRC once before. A friend said "let's try this", and told me what program to run and how to start. The conversation went something like: Hi, are you there? Yes. It works! Yes. Well goodbye. That was many years ago, and I have forgotten the name of the program. Then I got busy and forgot the WLUG meeting entirely. Diane has been using something called Zoom on Windows. Google turns up some hints that Zoom can work on Linux, but it seems to be a binary mystery code that connects to the mother ship and does secret stuff...anybody know? -- Keith
