Kevin Sullivan presentation

by Andy Stewart

HI everybody, As part of our cooperation with other user's groups (especially those that are part of Boston User Groups, as are we), I'm forwarding this to you. Kevin Sullivan, president of C3 group, will be giving a talk entitled "E-Mail: The Backdoor to your Network". This talk is not e-mail system specific, but about e-mail systems and vulnerabilities in general. Read more about it in the forwarded message below. If you have questions, please send them to Brad Dinerman, who's e-mail appears below. ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: User group chairs: request for announcement Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 13:39:24 -0400 From: "Bradley J. Dinerman" <BDinerman(a)BostonUserGroups.com> To: <Members(a)BostonUserGroups.com> To all user group chairs: I'd like to ask your assistance. My group, the Boston Area Exchange Server User Group, is planning a special presentation at our November meeting (11/29). The topic will be "E-Mail: The Backdoor To Your Network," and will be given by Kevin Sullivan, president of C3 Group. [Some of you may remember that Kevin gave a key security presentation to the October TechNet expo last year. It was extremely well received.] Please note that this presentation is not Exchange Server specific. It addresses e-mail systems and vulnerabilities in general, regardless of platform! I am declaring this meeting "special" because of the importance of the topic, as well as the fact that I am promoting it to multiple user groups. In particular, I'd like to ask if you could announce this meeting to your user groups, either by e-mail or at your upcoming meeting. The details that I provided in my own group's October newsletter are below my signature. You can feel free to copy the content, or to summarize accordingly. Please let me know if you are willing to announce this to your group (or not). Thank you, Brad Dinerman Chair, Boston Area Exchange Server User Group Director and Webmaster, BostonUserGroups, Inc. __________________________________________________________________ SPECIAL NOVEMBER MEETING This is a *must-attend* event, and will be publicized to a large number of user groups. Kevin Sullivan, president and security specialist extraordinaire of C3 Group, will present on a topic that is probably near and dear to most of our hearts: "E-Mail: The Backdoor To Your Network." The presentation will be interesting for both the non-technical as well as the overly-technical. Kevin writes: "Recent experience with the rapidly spreading and highly destructive Nimda and SirCam worms has demonstrated the ease with which a harmful "payload" can slip in to many otherwise secure networks via Email. I will open by having a sacrificial laptop with IE 5.5 SP1 and Outlook 2K SP1. I will connect to a server and receive my e-mail messages, then watch as my poor computer becomes infected with as many different viruses and worms as I can cram in before it dies. Then we will follow the process (on another system) of how the attack got from the (possibly) clueless sender to the clueless recipient. We will review how the mail travels from your desktop to the recipient - through local, corporate, and Internet servers. We will pay particular attention to attachments - how they are attached, transmitted, and delivered (and we will break the silence surrounding MIME). Finally, we will look at some specific examples of vulnerabilities and how they can be reduced." OK, so in addition to being an incredibly timely and popular topic, what else is different? Because it will be highly publicized to the user group community and we will be expecting a higher than usual turnout, registration will be required for this meeting. You can pre-register at http://www.ExchangeServerBoston.com/Registration. In addition, I will be asking for the first time ever, for a nominal fee for the meeting. It is only a paltry $2, but will help to cover some of the base operating expenses for this and other meetings, including our membership to Boston User Groups, Inc. [Those who register at the door will have to shell out a whopping 50% more, $3] I've already asked a number of vendors for raffle contributions for this meeting, and many of them have happily obliged. As usual, pizza/beverages will be free of charge, and will be sponsored this month by SilverSword Solutions (http://www.SilverSword.com) ------------------------------------------------------- -- Andy Stewart Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA, USA http://www.wlug.org

Reminder: Meeting Tomorrow! Feb. 20th, 2018!!! Topic: Encryption! Note the Location!!!

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, We've got a meeting tomorrow! My good friend Nick is going to deep dive on encryption! Location: Fuller Labs Rm 311 Time: 7pm The speaker for this meeting is my good friend Dr. Nick Howgrave-Graham. He's a cryptographer who has experience in both the making and breaking of encryption systems. This will be a general talk about some commonly used encryption systems, the math around them and how some of these systems have been broken through poor design. If there are some specific encryption algorithm / system that you'd like to deep dive, email the list, I'll let Nick know and possibly he can focus on that. As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for a bite to eat. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Meeting minutes from earlier this week

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI everybody, We had our meeting in one of the rooms right off of the Morgan Hall dining area. I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers (welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few. After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC: http://www.realvnc.com http://www.tightvnc.com <-- There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop, which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....). In addition, Mel K. (newcomer) brought his laptop, onto which he wanted to install RedHat 9.0, which was having trouble recognizing his external USB hard drive. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress. Pizza / soda followed at the Tech Pizza restaurant where we've gone after the last several meetings. Mel mentioned that he has interest in VistA (open source medical software). Try http://www.vistasoftware.org and google turns up other seemingly related links. Hi there, Welcome! The meetings are held in the Lower Wedge, which is between Daniels and Morgan Hall (buildings A and H), which you can see on the campus map: http://www.wpi.edu/About/Visitors/Images/walkingmap.pdf You don't need an ID to get into the area, and there should be plenty of parking on the quad area in front of the buildings. It is what is left from the Boston > Computer Society, and as such may have pre-dated even GNHLUG. I believe that BLU predates WLUG by quite a bit. I had just started learning about Linux, and I knew nothing of the GPL or the ideals surrounding Free Software. I decided that I wanted a place to hang out with people more knowledgeable about Linux. I lived in Worcester at the time, and I didn't want to drive to Boston or New Hampshire for a meeting due to the distance. I had never been to a user group meeting of any sort, yet I decided to jump into the deep end of the pool, with no clue of what to do, or how to do it, or what the result would be. All I thought was that people needed to be brought together. As a WPI alumnus, it seemed like a natural place for such a gathering. WLUG's first meeting was in July 1997 in the WPI Library. Maddog was there, and our first speaker was Jim Paradis. We had 17 people in attendance. I distinctly remember maddog telling me at that time that if we had 17 people in attendance in a year, we'd be doing quite well. We purchased really expensive food from DAKA, the WPI cafeteria service at that time. Later, we moved to different rooms on campus, and I brought soda and cookies. I never believed in charging membership dues for WLUG. I decided to go with small voluntary donations, just to defray costs, and no more. Somehow, it worked. We had something on the order of 50 people show up at what I think was probably the best attended WLUG meeting in history. I don't remember the year, but KDE had just come out, and I gave a talk about it. I have a feeling that this meeting took place in the big room in Olin Hall. The summer parties were always a big hit. Great food, conversations, and great people. While we occasionally had a speaker from outside of the club, most of the speakers were members of WLUG. We have a very talented membership who was never afraid to get up in front of the crowd to share what they know. I learned a lot from WLUG, both technically and otherwise. WLUG has its own Tux penguin, hand made by Doug Waud. WLUG Tux shows up at summer gatherings and other unexpected times. I'm sure if a bunch of us sat together after a WLUG meeting, we'd recall more stories and could, if desired, document the club's history. I think it would be a lot of fun! Andy

Hey Tim, Thanks for the update! This meeting agenda looks exciting! I might get some new inspiration for my Raspberry Pi. Do we have a preference for where we could eat after this meeting? Heh, I haven't used irc for over a decade now, and never was a big irc user. Maybe I'll try to join up thursday night. I've been messing around with ATTiny85 chips and programming them from Linux lately. Need to get off my duff and do more with it. Ideally I'll be able to give a talk about KiCAD and designing boards with Linux (and windows) software. Very cool stuff. John
