I will open by having a sacrificial laptop with IE 5.5 SP1 and Outlook 2K SP1. I will connect to a server and receive my e-mail messages, then watch as my poor computer becomes infected with as many different viruses and worms as I can cram in before it dies. Then we will follow the process (on another system) of how the attack got from the (possibly) clueless sender to the clueless recipient. We will review how the mail travels from your desktop to the recipient - through local, corporate, and Internet servers. We will pay particular attention to attachments - how they are attached, transmitted, and delivered (and we will break the silence surrounding MIME). Hey Gang, We've got a meeting tomorrow! My good friend Nick is going to deep dive on encryption! Location: Fuller Labs Rm 311 Time: 7pm The speaker for this meeting is my good friend Dr. Nick Howgrave-Graham. He's a cryptographer who has experience in both the making and breaking of encryption systems. This will be a general talk about some commonly used encryption systems, the math around them and how some of these systems have been broken through poor design. If there are some specific encryption algorithm / system that you'd like to deep dive, email the list, I'll let Nick know and possibly he can focus on that. As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for a bite to eat. I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers (welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few. After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC: http://www.realvnc.com http://www.tightvnc.com <-- There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop, which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....). In addition, Mel K. (newcomer) brought his laptop, onto which he wanted to install RedHat 9.0, which was having trouble recognizing his external USB hard drive. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress. Pizza / soda followed at the Tech Pizza restaurant where we've gone after the last several meetings. Mel mentioned that he has interest in VistA (open source medical software). I had just started learning about Linux, and I knew nothing of the GPL or the ideals surrounding Free Software. I decided that I wanted a place to hang out with people more knowledgeable about Linux. I lived in Worcester at the time, and I didn't want to drive to Boston or New Hampshire for a meeting due to the distance. I had never been to a user group meeting of any sort, yet I decided to jump into the deep end of the pool, with no clue of what to do, or how to do it, or what the result would be. All I thought was that people needed to be brought together. As a WPI alumnus, it seemed like a natural place for such a gathering. WLUG's first meeting was in July 1997 in the WPI Library. Maddog was there, and our first speaker was Jim Paradis. We had 17 people in attendance. I distinctly remember maddog telling me at that time that if we had 17 people in attendance in a year, we'd be doing quite well. We purchased really expensive food from DAKA, the WPI cafeteria service at that time. Later, we moved to different rooms on campus, and I brought soda and cookies. I never believed in charging membership dues for WLUG. I decided to go with small voluntary donations, just to defray costs, and no more. Somehow, it worked. We had something on the order of 50 people show up at what I think was probably the best attended WLUG meeting in history. I don't remember the year, but KDE had just come out, and I gave a talk about it. I have a feeling that this meeting took place in the big room in Olin Hall. The summer parties were always a big hit. Great food, conversations, and great people. While we occasionally had a speaker from outside of the club, most of the speakers were members of WLUG. We have a very talented membership who was never afraid to get up in front of the crowd to share what they know. I learned a lot from WLUG, both technically and otherwise. WLUG has its own Tux penguin, hand made by Doug Waud. WLUG Tux shows up at summer gatherings and other unexpected times. I'm sure if a bunch of us sat together after a WLUG meeting, we'd recall more stories and could, if desired, document the club's history. I think it would be a lot of fun! Andy
