September WLUG Meeting Announcement!

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting next week! Date: September 12, 2019 Time: 7pm Location: WPI Campus Center Mid-Century Room (rm 331) aka. the usual haunt Topic: Tinkercad codeblocks and more! I know that a few of us have tinkered with and enjoy using OpenSCAD. However, for many users the learning curve is REALLY steep and this steep learning curve has kept many users away from programmatic shape generation for 3d modeling. Basically writing code to generate a shape. At our last meeting Frank Sweetser showed off something really cool, which is that Tinkercad has now integrated a "scratch" like language into Tinkercad. At this meeting someone will be giving a demo of this. I think we would be remiss if we didn't talk about exFAT and Microsoft's decision to open the patents on it. It *sounds* like we may have exFAT becoming a first class citizen on linux. Is this Microsoft playing some long game of embrace, extend, extinguish or are we moving towards some wild convergence point? In that is the interesting conversation where we think linux will be in another ten years and for that matter Microsoft. As usual, snacks and refreshments will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for dinner and fall deeper down the rabbit hole! Later, Tim. WLUG President -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: Jitsi..

by Tim Keller

Microcenter is showing them available on Oct. 23rd. My plan was to drive there directly before going to work and just be waiting at the door and buy one. Yeah, watching some video's I see the same stuff.. that starting with the pi4, you need active cooling.. which saddens me a bit. I'm using one to drive my 3d printer, and at this point the pi4 with the fan is louder than the printer.. Tim. I have two questions to ask the group. 1. Does the second Thursday still work for people or would a Wed/Fri work better? 2. How far would people be willing to drive? As for the second question, doing some research, Leominster public library has meeting rooms (I'm also a LPL member) and they're open till 9pm. Moreover, Leominster has great afforable places to eat. I believe it's likely too late for me to schedule a meeting at LPL, but I can always call and ask. So I suspect this months meeting (which is going to be this Thursday) will be virtual. Though I'll let people know asap. Let me know what you think, I'd really like some input. So, are we decided on talking about Plex / Kodi? Is there enough there to turn into a whole meeting? Maybe we could do a Plex / RetroPi mashup meeting? Thanks, Tim. Upcoming meeting...

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi everybody, Wow...time flies...its nearly meeting time again. Based on what I saw on the mailing list recently, I'm wondering if we should have a "Gentoo" meeting. Who would like to volunteer to do this (it could be more than one)? Here is a possible outline: - what is Gentoo? - why Gentoo vs. <pick_another_distro>? - demo an install (albeit a "shortcut" with everything precompiled) - pros / cons - cool features! Perhaps one person could give the group an overview, while a couple of other people demo other aspects of Gentoo. To those of you already running Gentoo: does this make sense?
