Re: [Wlug] New to the group

by Tal Cohen

Hi Andy, and hello to everyone in WLUG! I will definitely try to make May's meeting. I have been working on various X-nix based systems since 1999 (Solaris, HPUX, AIX, Red-Hat, and now CRUX). I do a lot in Perl, MySQL, Nagios, BASH, and Apache. Interests...varies depending on what I am doing at any given time. I would like to learn more about IPC programming and multi-process threading in X-nix. I like getting my hands dirty working with hardware. I would not mind learning more about building custom hardware that interfaces with a system...perhaps robotics or telecom (don't get the wrong idea, I have little knowledge in this area right now). I'm stuffed with pizza and soda. Hopefully you'll be able to come to a few meetings and meet folks. We meet once per month at WPI in Worcester, MA USA. Let us know if you have other questions about the group, and we'll be sure to answer them. Also, I'm sure people are curious about your interest and experience with Linux, so please, do tell. WLUG meeting and presentation material

by Joshua Stone

Hey everyone, Thank you again for letting me present on Silverblue, Toolbox, and Flatpak for December's WLUG meeting! I've uploaded a PDF copy of the slideshow material to my Google Drive for anyone who couldn't make it to the meeting and/or wants to look at some of the references inside: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1FJc9864buwRFS5UktivfffU7u9CySSKB Admittedly the material itself can be difficult to understand as it was made more to complement an oral presentation format, but I could continue improving on the material to make it more complete if there's enough interest, plus much development has been going on around containers that it makes sense to update it anyway. I hope everyone is having an excellent time enjoying the holidays! -Josh

Re: Reminder! Meeting tomorrow @ 7pm @ Technocopia!

by Tim Keller

Last night's meeting was great! We got Matt setup with a macbook running Ubuntu, got into the weeds talking about SSSD and rounded it out with some talk about the pi5. Kevin then showed off the Eagle file browser. Hopefully next month we'll have a pi5 to do some hands on screwing around with! Later, Tim. Every year, before the end of the calendar year, you see these TV shows which summarize the news from the past 12 months. What about Linux news from this year that could be summarized at the meeting? OK, I'm grabbing at straws here......maybe I'll just stick with the chips and dip. Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

WLUG meeting idea - Distro comparison

by joel d

I am setting up a new laptop and trying to decide on which distro to go with... Probably the same list of finalists as everyone else in no particular order (Red Hat / CentOS / Fedora / Ubuntu / Gentoo / others). Has WLUG done a disto comparison night meeting? I think it might be interesting. Each person bring in a laptop with their favorite mainstream distro (possibly 3 or 4). Spend 20 to 30 minutes on each, showing the major differences (installs / apps handling / etc) and why they like it. Probably not a new idea. If it's been done of late then please disregard as I cannot make as many meetings as I once could. (This is due to my personal schedule not due to lack of interest.) Joel

Meeting topic

by Mike Leo

Thanks to all for letting me attend my first LUG! Dave Walsh from Redhat was a great speaker. I was just thinking about a topic for a future meeting. It was nice to meet all of you, but didn't get to discuss what distro/windows manager you all use, who you work for and how your company is productionalizing linux. We have linux deployed now and I am curious to know how ya'll have done it as noone else I know is using it.....yet! So my suggestion is a 5 minute intro for those who want to talk about who you are and how your company is using and support linux. just a thought. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yes. If you did not see Tim's announcement of the same, then something is wrong. Which leads me to my proposal, which I will put in another message so that it is not lost at the bottom. -- Keith PS: While I was writing this, two new messages came to me from wlug, one appears to be a copy of Doug Mildram's message dated 2018-12-09 the other a reply to that.

Its Meeting time !

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Time flies, especially in the summer. I can't believe its already time for another WLUG meeting. Our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 PM. What will we discuss this month? I was hoping somebody had an iRivier or iPod MP3 player with the Linux software working that would bring it to the meeting to demo it, but so far, nobody has volunteered. (iRiver, iPod, iAudio, for what does the 'i' stand - individual??). One possible area of interest is directory services (LDAP). I don't think we've ever had a talk on that subject. Its my understanding that LDAP is good for more than just creating a giant list of email addresses for an organization. Another possible idea would be a talk about databases. What are the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL - are they technical or is this a religious war? OK, I've tossed out a few ideas, but to make it work, we need a volunteer. Please send me email if you are interested in leading the discussion on either these proposed topics or something else of interest to the group.
