Great meeting last night... but we need topics...

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Thanks for everybody who showed up, we had a great time! We also had a couple new people show which was great! However, it's clear that even doing the virtual meetings, we need to have a topic.. we simply ran out of stuff to talk about... For the next meeting I'm going to do a talk on https://min.io/ It's an open source object storage system that works just like S3 only you can host it locally. IF people have things they'd like to talk about let me know! Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: Reminder: WLUG Meeting TONIGHT! Topic: Linux Kernel 6.12.x!

by Tim Keller

Very cool! The meeting went great. I ended up doing an inadvertent demo of the kernel when I had jitsi going, a compile on 2 of my 4 cores, plus running cad and my machine just kept on chugging. Technocopia was having a holiday party so we had lots of people wander in as well. All in all, it was great. Tim. Re: (ingesting) WLUG Meeting..Topic: DNS Redirection.

by Doug Mildram

doug in Maine> Thanks Steve Thibault ! Though I missed the meeting, EXTREMELY COOL "slides" ...Colors!Fonts!Boxes all gorgeous. w/opt reveal.js sidebars which nicely restate the main slides. I'm only on the first few pages! p 3(of 24) alone =worthy of notes+study. I "had to know" what is (+runs on what OS's) a pi-hole, well stated at https://docs.pi-hole.net/main/prerequisites/#supported-operating-systems Ah, peeking ahead, more fun/tricks needed. As a former sysadmin (lazy?old?) ex network-engineer, I'm finally motivated to stop feeding the bots ! Price ongoing: $5/mo for a VPS (for TailScale client)..... Guess I'll write that off (mental motivation) for likely ad-blocking improvement. Haven't bought a newish Pi ........Yet. Plus,.... headscale/TailScale seems just too cool to not have, somewhere like gf's house. Re: WLUG Meeting June 13th 2019! Topic: Side Channel Attacks

by thinkbrown＠gmail.com

Hey Kevin, WLUG is an open door meeting. If you'd like to attend, you're more than welcome to show up. As far as this months topic, It might also be worth talking about cpu management engines, since they're also a major source of vulnerabilities, as AMD found out this week. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/psptool-amd-secure-technology-psp-firmwar… Logan On Sat, Jun 8, 2019, 07:34 Kevin via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > I have been on the mailing list a while..... > > I would like to come up a meeting this Jun 13. > > Are there any specifing instructions for a first time visitor? > > > On 6/7/19 9:10 AM, Tim Keller via WLUG wrote: > > Hey Everybody, > > We've got a meeting on Thursday June 13th at 7PM! > Location: WPI Campus Center Mid-Century room (rm 331) aka, the usual haunt. > > After last meeting we ended up having a side conversation regarding the > now multiple side channel attacks that the Intel microarchitecture is > vulnerable to. > > I thought it might be a good time to actually deep dive what these are, > why they keep happening, why they're likely to continue and what efforts > are being put in to try to mitigate them and the effects these migrations > have on performance. > > As usual snacks and refreshments will be supplied and afterwards we'll > head off for dinner to continue the conversation. > > Thanks, > Tim. > > -- > I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their > constituents as "consumers". > > _______________________________________________ > WLUG mailing list -- wlug(a)lists.wlug.org > To unsubscribe send an email to wlug-leave(a)lists.wlug.org > > _______________________________________________ > WLUG mailing list -- wlug(a)lists.wlug.org > To unsubscribe send an email to wlug-leave(a)lists.wlug.org >

Wednesday doesn't really work for me though... > I'm going to work on getting some better omni directional mics for future meetings. One of those flat mics that sit on the desk/floor might be a good idea. I've beeen hearing alot of murmurs about Mastodon as an alternative for Twitter (which I never use) in some cases. I'm just enjoying watching the dumpster fire over there. Speaking of interesting meetings...

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ...what do you all propose for a topic for the Sept. 8 meeting? More importantly, does anybody want to do a presentation or lead the discussion? This month, I've been debugging USB problems on my server, and I think I may have made some progress on USB 1.x, but not on USB 2.x. I'm not sure if this is a meeting topic - howto get stuff to work on USB and how to debug it if it does not. Your thoughts? Thanks! If/when this happens, it will be at some future WLUG meeting (not Aug 2005). I would like to see this happen! In an earlier email, Frank Moody said that he would see about setting up his iRiver with his laptop. With that, I think the meeting would then be about MP3 players. Eric, please bring your ipod and whatever you need to do a demo of it. If anybody has a different type of MP3 player that works with Linux, bring it along, (the more, the merrier). I had hoped to have my new MP3 player for the meeting, but the dude on eBay from whom I purchased this player is taking his time shipping it to me (auction closed 02-aug, not shipped yet...). Thanks!
