Reminder: WLUG Meeting, Wed June 15, 7:00 PM

This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in Linux. Tim Keller will be our guest speaker, and he'll be talking about Logical Volume Management (LVM). More details can be found on the WLUG home page. I will have two books for the no cost raffle: Succeeding with Open Source by Bernard Golden Published by Addison-Wesley 2005 PHP5 Power Programming by Gutmans, Bakken, and Rethans Published by Prentice Hall 2005 The raffle winner is requested to write a review of the book and to post it somewhere on the Internet, and to copy the publisher. We had discussed the possibility of a summer barbecue in lieu of the July meeting. I think someone said we could have the party at their place, but I can't remember who said that. If this person was serious, please contact me via email and we can work out the particulars. It'll be a nice way to celebrate WLUG's 8th anniversary (we started July 1997)! After the meeting, we'll go out for pizza/soda at the Tech Pizza restaurant on Highland Street. Its a small place, but the 8-10 of us that go seem to be having a good time, and we've never had to wait for a table. :-) It may be hot in there this time of year...we'll have to scope it out. Reminder: Upcoming Meeting Wed Oct 10th

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Our next WLUG meeting is approaching soon. On Wednesday, October 10th, 2007, we'll be having our Newbie Night at WLUG. On this occasion, new Linux users are most welcome to attend and ask their questions to the more experienced Linux users in a non-intimidating environment. Experienced folks are also welcome to attend to help out the new users. Try to remember what it was like when you were a new user and tailor your answers accordingly! The new folks will be very appreciative. Also, if some people would be willing to burn a few CDs or DVDs with their favorite Linux distribution or Live CD, then the new users will have choices that they can take home and try at their leisure. My personal recommendations would be Knoppix, (K)ubuntu, OpenSuse, Damn Small Linux, and some RedHat derivative (Fedora, CentOS, etc). Feel free to share whatever your favorite may be. I also think that a few laptops running these different distros would be great demo tools for the new users. One last note: unfortunately, I will not be present for this meeting. I will be in Austin, TX on business. I've asked Chuck and Frank if they would run the meeting. Just because I can't make it, you should all still get together and enjoy the meeting. This is your chance to make fun of me in my absence (as opposed to doing so in my presence!). :-) I will have access to email during my trip. My house was down to 47 degrees at one point, except for the room with the fireplace, which was a comfortable 65 degrees. I am now starting to get back to normal. The kids watched DVDs on the laptop, LED flashlights are very low power, and the gas grill was used a lot. Unfortunately, I had no hot water, but the 80 gallon water tank is well insulated, so I didn't have to take stone cold showers, just cool ones, military style. I lost many, many branches in the trees, which were strewn across the yard. Thankfully, the house was not damaged. See you all on Thursday evening! Meeting Topic Idea - MythTV

WLUG'ers, I have a meeting topic idea but very little knowledge of the proposed topic, MythTV. I have a DVR through my cable provider, Charter, but am unhappy with it's features and capacity. I am ready to buy a capture card, re-dedicate some PC hardware and commit to building a Myth box. I know this was covered back in 2003 by Tim Keller, but my lack of recall has me missing details of his excellent presentation. Any others think this is a good idea for a meeting topic? If so, would anyone indulge by presenting Myth with their knowledge, hardware info (PC spec and video spec) and setup & install details? Joel

Many of you have suggested some good topics in our recent email threads. I propose that this meeting be a round table discussion of those and any other topics of interest. I'll bring my new laptop for discussion as well. It is a Linux Certified LC2464T running Kubuntu. However, I hope somebody has a DVI-SVGA adapter which I can borrow for the meeting, since I don't yet have one. Since this is my first experience with a Debian type of distribution, I could offer my first impressions.
