Chuck, That's awesome! I've seen there are apt repositories going as well! Since this week is a follies dejour for me.. You'll all laugh. Installing 6.12.8 I managed to mess up my order of operations and rebooted before fully updating the boot loader.. Don't install kernels when you're sleepy.. Tim. Reminder: Upcoming Meeting

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, We have a WLUG meeting scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 PM in the Access Grid room at WPI. I'm not sure of the topic, but if nothing better turns up, I'll start babbling about my most recent USB experience (which started unpleasantly but ultimately had a happy ending), and we can segue from there into whatever topic people wish to discuss. Bring your Linux problems and try to stump the audience. :-) I'll bring my iAudio G3 MP3/Ogg player since a couple of people said they wanted to see it. I had hoped to have it at the last meeting but it wasn't shipped to me in time. Naturally, we'll go out for pizza after the meeting. We can discuss the insanity of looting televisions during a flood crisis, the possibility of adding anti-DRM language to GPL v3, and whatever else we find interesting. See ya then! Plex holds more interest for me currently as I plan to soon build a new home NAS for professional, personal and entertainment data. Would want to include Plex in those plans. RetroPie is interesting too. Built one with my 10 year old son. He learned a lot. Dad can still win at Atari Combat. I could bring it and talk about it, but would likely be a relatively short discussion. BitCoin for me has less interest. Technically it's harder to mine for BitCoin prime numbers every month. As a financial currency it is not very strong, not quite taking the world by storm. I like it's government independence, but prepper friends prefer precious metals. We talked about doing a talk about plex, I'm not sure how interested people are. Another topic that came up was a talk about setting up a RetroPi system. Another topic that came up later was BitCoin. Personally I've always found bitcoin an enigma. If anybody in the group understands it I'd love to learn about it and possibly what tools there are on linux for mining and storing bitcoins. Tim, A newbie question: With respect to Linux security/virus protection, is Firejail Security Sandbox (https://firejail.wordpress.com/ ) worthwhile. It is in the Mint repository. The Linux.com review is at: https://www.linux.com/learn/lock-your-untrusted-applications-firejail Another review of it is at http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/firejail.html If anyone uses it, perhaps a discussion at tonight's meeting. Re: [Wlug] Jan 15 meeting - trolling for a topic

by Stephen C. Daukas

I'm not volunteering because my calendar is more than full, but I wonder if there is any interest regarding the Sun Java Desktop System and how it works with Linux. Maybe someone in-the-know could offer a talk/demo? From sun.com: /In August of 2003, Sun Microsystems announced the Sun Java Desktop System, a software package that consists of a fully integrated client environment based on open source components and industry standards, offered as an affordable, comprehensive, simple-to-use, secure enterprise-grade desktop solution. Key features include a well-defined, integrated look and feel, familiar desktop themes, as well as file, folder, and print interoperability with Microsoft Windows and Linux/UNIX environments. /"The Java Desktop System is a comprehensive and secure enterprise desktop environment that runs on Solaris and Linux. It provides the enterprise with the first viable alternative to Windows in 15 years, by offering a complete feature set at a fraction of the cost of a Windows upgrade." Might be interesting... Re: Where to hold meetings..

I can finagle most any night except Wednesdays. Thursday is easiest here. So a vote to stay Thursdays. I will second the vote for closer to Worcester or South. Leominster requires 50+ minutes of farm lands tour each way and logistics to leave earlier. Leaving earlier is harder with sport after school pickup and other commitments.
