Announce: Change in tonight's WLUG meeting

Sadly, Jim Gettys has been ill and will be unable to speak at tonight's meeting. We'll still meet and have an informal discussion and answer any Linux/FOSS support questions people have. We'll also raffle off some books and go out for pizza afterwards. The location will be the WPI Campus Center, Mid-Centry Room 331. This month we will have Jim Gettys from Bell Labs talk about Internet buffer bloat. "Internet buffer bloat, by Jim Gettys (Bell Labs) VOIP and teleconferencing often perform much more poorly on today's Internet than the Internet of a decade ago, despite great gains in bandwidth. Lots of fiber, cheap memory, smart hardware, variability of wireless goodput, changes in web browser behaviour, changes in TCP implementations, and a focus on benchmarking Internet performance solely by bandwidth, and engineer's natural reluctance to drop packets have conspired to encourage papering over problems by adding buffers; each of which may introduce latency when filled. The mistaken quest to never drop packets has destroyed interactivity under load, and often results in actual higher packet loss, as TCP's congestion avoidance algorithms have been defeated by these buffers. The lessons of the "RED manifesto" of 1997 have been forgotten or never learned by a new generation of engineers." WLUG Meeting TONIGHT Wed Nov 14th

Hi Everybody, Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend this evening's WLUG meeting due to a rotten cold and a low grade fever which I seem to have picked up somewhere. I would encourage all of you to meet this evening, and some brave soul who has been in WLUG for a long time can get up and run the meeting in my absence. Have a beer for me at the Boynton! Here is what I had planned to report to the group this evening. I would like somebody to read this to the group in case folks haven't checked their e-mail before the meeting. 1) WLUG financials I have consolidated the accounts so that all of the WLUG money is in an account at the Lowell Five bank in Chelmsford, MA. I just paid the $50 fee to join the Boston User Groups as was voted at a previous WLUG meeting, and I wrote myself a $75 check for refreshments for the calendar year 2001. That leaves us with approx. $575.00 in the bank, which has been raised through your donations as well as install fest proceeds. 2) Annual Linux Showcase This event was not attended nearly as well as in past years, due in part to the fear of flying and by the fact that many computer people have been recently laid off. There were only half as many vendors as in the past, again due to the economy, I suspect. I found the quality of the techinical talks to be very good. I heard talk that there wouldn't be an ALS next year, but that Maddog was pushing for a small number of more local conferences, perhaps one in Boston. Some cool things which I saw at ALS: a) Linux running on a Compaq iPAQ, one running X and an xterm, the other running Qt Embedded with a bunch of PDA like applications. Refer to http://www.handhelds.org for more information. b) Latest versions of Gnome and KDE in action c) A large number of kernel hackers (including Linus) on one room d) A cluster of small embedded computers built by Los Alamos National Labs, all running Linux out of FLASH memory. e) A great beer selection at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company I personally spoke to Jim Gettys and a representative from the Free Software Foundation (I think his name was Brad, but I have his card). I might be able to get one or both of these folks to come to WLUG to give a talk in the future. I guess I'll have to save the freebies until next month. See ya later, and have a great meeting! Announce: UPDATE: WLUG Meeting Thu 2/20 7PM: Software Defined Radio

Hi folks, Due to the weather this week, I've rescheduled this month's WLUG meeting for the following week, Thursday, February 20 at 7:00 PM, in the WPI Campus Center, Hagglund Room 301. Our speaker this month will be Andy Stewart, who founded WLUG in 1997 and now runs the Chelmsford Linux Meetup. Andy plans to talk about software defined radio on Linux, and with luck, do a live demonstration of gqrx: http://gqrx.dk/ If there is time, Andy *might* be able to show something related to the GNU Radio Companion, where one can build a software defined radio just by drawing the blocks and connecting them with lines. Thursday, February 20, 7:00 - 9:00 PM WPI Campus Center, Hagglund Room 301 This room is the one across the hall from our usual room, and is where we had the meeting with Jim Getty's on Bufferbloat. Hey Gang, We've got a meeting tonight at 7PM! It's still virtual because you know, the pandemic. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to stand 6' apart from each other and hang out! But until then, there's Jitsi! We'll be meeting here: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA at 7PM! We'll likely jibber jab until it's late.. My neighbors house may or may not catch on fire again! I'm going to show off Min.IO running in a docker container. I can show the web interface and then we'll stick some objects in the container. I know that several other WLUG members are also using it in production so it'll be interesting to get their take on it as well. Then I suspect we'll end up talking about all things nerdy! See you! Well, that didn't work out so well. I went to the location at the time, but there was not only no topic, but no meeting really. Only one other person was there. He said he is not on the mailing list and so did not get the cancellation notice. I said I am on the mailling list and did not get any such notice. We talked about stuff for half an hour and then went about our respective businesses. He gave me his email address, and asked to be put on the mailing list.
