This is just a rough guess, but did you ever check on the state tables in your openbsd firewall? In your setup you have state distributed amongst your clients, your firewall, and you NAT gateway, and unless all three are in sync you can easily get the kind of possessed network behavior you describe. Funky LVM hack we talked about...

Hey Gang, For those of you at the meeting who don't remember, Kevin had a 32GB flash disk that had a controller that had a built in understanding of FAT32. Thus formatting it as any other file system would work until you actually wrote to it then it would go insane. I postulated that one way to solve this would be to use LVM or MD, however when we tried this I hit a road block in that pvcreate won't let you pvcreate a regular old file, you need a device file, the same thing with MD. I finally managed to get it to work without having to hand add any devices into /dev... here's how... For my testing I created 4 100MB files using the command: dd if=/dev/zero of=part[1-4] bs=1024k count=100 This is what Kevin would need to do to on his flash drive... 1. Create 16, 2GB files on the flash drive named part[1-16] 2. Create loopback to file mappings using the command "losetup /dev/loop1 part1", repeat for all devices Also note, with this you could setup loopback encryption on these devices... If you suddenly find yourself without a loopback device issue the command in /dev "./MAKEDEV loop" However, I think udev will probably take care of it behind the scenes. 3. pvcreate /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... 4. vgcreate vgHACK /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... At this point if you issue a "vgdisplay" you should see how many (PE) physical extents you have. 5. lvcreate -n volume_name -l num_of_extends vgHACK If you use -L you can specify 300M, etc. Also you can specify how many stripes you want the data to be written in, which is handy if your 16 devices were on seperate disk controllers... Also you don't have to use all the extends in one logical volume, you could create lots of little volumes. 6. mkfs.ext3 /dev/vgHACK/volume_name 7. mount filesystem, sit back in bemusement that linux gives you the flexibility to do such things. Now... while were at it, if instead of LVM, if you wanted to use MD, this is what you'd do. If you have the lvm stuff from above, unmount the filesystem and issue a vgremove vgHACK it'll warn about active volumes, blah, blah... This command will take loop1,loop2,loop3,loop4 and put them into a 4 member RAID0 with no spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 This command will create a raid5 out of the four devices without a spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 It'll go off and build the array, now just format and mount and you're set to go. cat /proc/mdstat to see what it's upto. I was thinking of other insane things that Kevin can do with his 3 32GB flash disks. He could create 3 logical volumes each containing 16 members and then create an raid5 MD device using the logical volume members... He could create 3 16 member raid0's and then create a raid 5 out of them. He could install ZFS on top of fuse and then put all 48 devices into a zpool... Some people learn things in different ways. If reading HOWTOS was the best way to do something, why do we have WLUG meetings? I wouldn't see these as being comprehensive overviews of whatever we're trying to teach, but more like a WLUG presentation where we show the beginnings of one "cool" thing. I think this would be great for people who have heard of linux, but never tried it out before... The real newbies, the people who don't want to wade through pages and pages of documentation just to get an idea of what they need to do. Take the first video that was suggested, "What is linux and why it's good" I think a 15 minute video can show linux off more than reading about it for hours. Another person had suggested advocacy style videos, I would assume this would be "built in" to any video we made. If we make one on how to set up a small business server (mail, file sharing, dhcp, dns), then we would also mention why it's better than other solutions. Hell, maybe that video could even be used by employees to help sell management (who doesn't want to read through *any* technical documentation) on the linux idea. And yes, this is a lot of work. I wouldn't expect us to do more than one video a month. Lets take 60 for n ... 15 minute video equals 15 man-hours of work. 5 people working on it means they'll have to spend a full work day a month (I'm assuming video production is like programming where you don't scale linearly by throwing more people at it). What are your options for travel? Are you looking solely for just a Linux position? To be honest, they're hard to come by. (100% Linux) without experience. What is your retail experience include? I worked at Best Buy selling computers for 2 years & had 9 months of college course work completed when I landed my first position. The other cool thing though: You can 3d print a case for the old board if you upgrade. I plan on making a dock for them that will fit in 2-3u with a usb-backplane with a 10gbe switch, and 2x usb-c 10gbe + Power delivery. You'd be able to pack them super dense. Linux video edit SW : OpenShot is cool ! and.... AppImages

doug> Pardon my non-meeting-attendance all but 1? month since 2020...anyways, (new fun thing or things I got to learn, below) Mostly this email is a Fun/FYI, but I suspect OpenShot could be popular and maybe some of you use it,etc and maybe even one/some of you are dabbling,etc at video editing. Myself, barely so far. TMI Since a friend (for sister's anniversary) wanted to create a slideshow+music ( MP4, say ) I discovered how easy that is on Linux lately (googling offers ~10 or Top Ten choices of SW). And since I put linux on this friend's desktop, it's a great match and way to teach/learn. (gawd, these life-story-in-pictures quests sure can make a camera-bound picture owner/taker have to cope w their mess of jpegs in cellphone) DRUM ROLL: I only tried one offering for video editing, and scored. .......................chose one that some review(s?) said is most user friendly. It (OpenShot) seems great, for my too-simple needs (slideshow of static pics, adding music/mp3) and can obviously do so much more. Output and input choices have huge lists (eg AVI,MP4 variants,etc for output..... you generate/export to). SO ANOTHER THING i learned doing this is: There's a release/package thing I wasnt aware of ... ....seems a too-easy alternate, in favor of pkgs/release-dependent installs/updates. IT IS CALLED an App Image and it really appears to me to be THIS SIMPLE: a) You download one big file, eg for OpenShot a 130-140mb one-executable file that they name OpenShot-v2.5.1-x86_64.AppImage , you can get from https://www.openshot.org/download/ .....which says......... b) AppImage requires no installation. Just download, make executable, and run. doug> Correct, it doesn't unzip anything, and the one executable "fits all". Wow! I will admit that (on my Mint desktop) the first time I run it (as me/plain-user), the GUI intro/setup dialog/window does ask me Yes/No ? for some question about creating something for?on? the Desktop, and I said YES and I did not get anything added to my ~/Desktop. But who cares?
