This morning I went out and created a meetup group for WLUG: https://www.meetup.com/Worcester-Linux-Users-Group and paid for six months. Feel free to go and join up if you'd like. The matrix stuff is cool, I cut my teeth on IRC so I'm always partial to the old school but I also understand that eventually we'll want a slack channel as well maybe. Tim. The other cool thing though: You can 3d print a case for the old board if you upgrade. I plan on making a dock for them that will fit in 2-3u with a usb-backplane with a 10gbe switch, and 2x usb-c 10gbe + Power delivery. You'd be able to pack them super dense. Linux video edit SW : OpenShot is cool ! and.... AppImages

TMI Since a friend (for sister's anniversary) wanted to create a slideshow+music ( MP4, say ) I discovered how easy that is on Linux lately (googling offers ~10 or Top Ten choices of SW). And since I put linux on this friend's desktop, it's a great match and way to teach/learn. (gawd, these life-story-in-pictures quests sure can make a camera-bound picture owner/taker have to cope w their mess of jpegs in cellphone) DRUM ROLL: I only tried one offering for video editing, and scored. .......................chose one that some review(s?) said is most user friendly. It (OpenShot) seems great, for my too-simple needs (slideshow of static pics, adding music/mp3) and can obviously do so much more. Output and input choices have huge lists (eg AVI,MP4 variants,etc for output..... you generate/export to). SO ANOTHER THING i learned doing this is: There's a release/package thing I wasnt aware of ... ....seems a too-easy alternate, in favor of pkgs/release-dependent installs/updates. IT IS CALLED an App Image and it really appears to me to be THIS SIMPLE: a) You download one big file, eg for OpenShot a 130-140mb one-executable file that they name OpenShot-v2.5.1-x86_64.AppImage , you can get from https://www.openshot.org/download/ .....which says......... b) AppImage requires no installation. Just download, make executable, and run. doug> Correct, it doesn't unzip anything, and the one executable "fits all". Wow! I will admit that (on my Mint desktop) the first time I run it (as me/plain-user), the GUI intro/setup dialog/window does ask me Yes/No ? for some question about creating something for?on? the Desktop, and I said YES and I did not get anything added to my ~/Desktop. But who cares? Makes sense to me, Tim. Easy replacement is the selling point, and in some ways it's been the stumbling block to my converting entirely to linux. I still use Windows for a couple of tasks that either can't be done in linux (yet) or I haven't figured them out in linux yet (unsupported scanner). Show people that they can do the things they need to do with a minimal amount of effort and without having to pay microsoft, and there will be plenty of converts. Most of the things that most people do with their computers can now be done in linux without having to read a manual, and people need to know that. I am "underwhelmed" by Sax2's ability to get XFree right. I have just been upgrading my desktop to SuSE 8.2 and the screen was all screwed up. I finally went into /etc/X11/XF86Config and found that it seemed to think my 1Meg video memory (I'm the last of the big time spenders!} was 8 Meg. I just put a VideoRam 1024 in the Device section, dd'd a couple of 1280x1024 modes, defaulted to 8bit color depth, and X then ran fine. I believe you always have the choice of running either 4.x or 3.x but confess I forget how you tell the beast which one to use. :-). Tim, I would have to say I agree with your "user grouping" for the most part, but feel (IMHO) that there might be a group of people that fall between the novice and advanced users, lets call them the "hobbyist group". These people know how to use a computer, have probably "dabbled" in linux, but need some help performing certain tasks or need convincing on turning the corner and using linux full time. This is an important group because a) I'm a member of this group :o) and b) members of this group know the value of linux, but want to make sure they can do everything they want to do in linux i.e. listen to MP3's, burn CD's, browse the web, be able to use a word processor, etc .... I think that the general idea of spreading the linux word is a great idea especially on a visible medium, but the most value would be added if the largest user group is targeted. So, in a nutshell, I think you guys have a great idea and I hope to watch you guys on TV sometime soon.
