What I like best about Gentoo is picking and choosing which packages to include and leave out, both applications and libraries. For example, the other day I wanted to install "gtkpod", but I really don't want to have Mono or QT4 installed on my system, for various reasons. The USE= "-mono" and "-qt4" flags indicate that the listed packages will be built without that support. Gentoo handles that by passing the necessary options to "configure" when it builds the package, and that is IMO the main point of using a source-based distribution. If you *did* want support for mono, you could edit "/etc/make.conf" (system-wide) or "/etc/portage/package.use" (package-specific), add the "mono" flag (or remove "-mono"), and try again. For better or worse, I think gentoo kind of peaked in popularity several years ago. Nice meeting you tonight, Chuck, and THANKS for the redhat cd's... sec was the freeware event correlation tool I spoke of tonight: It is a straightforward perl script and doesn't implement a full state machine, but it nevertheless provides some inklings of what more complciated event correlators do. Check it at http://kodu.neti.ee/~risto/sec/ The best commercial event corellation tools IMHO are Nervecenter, Taave, Smarts, and Netcool. Each has its niche where it's best in class, and there are others, like HP's ECS, Logec, G2, etc. My friend Doug Stevenson is a specialist in event correlation and wrote the Maji spec: the open source event correlation engine being developed under the umbrella of OpenNMS (yeah, so, it'll be java - but it will also be very feature rich). He masterfully defines some of the layers of granularity that one might see amongst the different offerings in the Event Correlation space. Types we talked about tonight include event correlation (reducing traps) and device correlation (mapping switch states to events). His definitions are listed below... Mike <snipped message> OK... Additionally, device correlation lends itself toward configuration management as it is a dynamic inventory of devices, subsystems, components, and behaviors. This level of correlation enables one to manage and classify a conglomeration of managed objects as a manageable entity. Service Correlation - This correlation is used to determine the devices and systems that make up an IT service. In essence, this is the correlation of managed objects and systems to business rules; similar to a translation of terms from computers and systems to business services. The Service Correlation can be extended to customer impact analysis, business profitability impact analysis, etc. Performance Correlation - This correlation is used to determine the effects performance has with regards to a fault. It is unique in that performance correlation can be applied to enhance the correlation of all of the other categories. Security Correlation - This correlation is used to determine the degree of threats caused by security incidents. I checked with Shrewsbury's studio; all we need is one Shrewsbury resident to be the sponser to use their studio. The resident must fill out a form and they become a member. No costs are involved to be a member. We may have to buy some tapes; they use miniDV for digital recording. Anyone who uses the equipment must get a bit of training. That's not a big deal. I have an Ultra 60 that needs a home. I have Aurora on it, though it's an old version. The system has been in storage for two years, at least. I've had no issues with mine on fedora. For what it's worth. Highly recommend framework. Although I did get the runaround with support about a usb4 dock. Kept getting me to try windows, despite the fact I had. But we have 3, they're rock solid. Work laptop and she wants access to files regardless of location (work, home, road). I tried Proton drive for 15 minutes this week. As a secure file storage drive, it works. Tested it with a PDF file and could not click on PDF to open file in any PDF viewer. I guess its secure, but not ready for wife. She would just start copying files elsewhere in C: to get things done, making any security foolishly pointless. Still considering wife support options. Thinking currently about a hybrid option. Lots of these files in laptop C: drive folders, unsecured, fast and easy. Good for prior work at prior companies, most word, spreadsheet PowerPoint, pics, etc. Then certain "precious" files on a fast USB thumb drive at home (resume, anything with taxes, income, ID or social). I've recently learned about BigBlueButton, which is designed around teaching with features like slideshow integration and session recordings (currently disabled due to increased demand though). I think this could work well for us seeing as we tend to do presentations hosted our own computers anyway. It's not uncommon for companies to outsource the mechanics of hiring process (publishing listings, storing resumes, meeting resume retention laws, etc), and even if it's only being read by in-house people, the HR staff who get first crack at it are non-technical people likely to be on Windows or Mac anyway. The TEK keyboard looks good and with familiar design. I thought at first you were talking about the brand I use: I currently have a TEX Shinobi, which has the trackpoint (like on Thinkpads) if you use those, as well as left click/right click/scroll. I like the size as well, which I find to be compact. My only real issues: I would choose switches other than browns (there is a DIY version which seems interesting) and the scroll button does not register as Mouse3. They're still mostly QWERTY, but have moved a few of the special keys around, like enter and delete. Even these took some time to get used to, and a little more time to get used to switching back and forth with the typical layout on anything else. I'd have to see some pretty impressive improvements before I'd try to really put in the work to learn and switch between the whole alphabet. Besides, I find that the keyboard is rarely the bottleneck - I quite frequently can type faster than I can think, so typing faster wouldn't speed up my work at all!
