tim, it seems like we don't have enough people to run the show. maybe different date and time would be more appropriate for people(depending, of course, on the studio availability)... first, we need people to produce the show. it's a commitment of half an hour ones? a month.(could be ones in two months) is there anyone who would like to join the venture? second, we need a qualified show host who will lead the show and interview guests. i'm a new to linux and i would not dare to discuss it with my expertize. third, there is little problem with scan converter which can be replaced by a notebook with a video output. a tape of the show will be available immediately after the show and can be broadcast on any channel(depending on the amount of money, sponsorship etc; public access channels are free). also it's a good learning tool which can be multiplied and offered to the public. i still remember a hot discussion on wlug about introducing linux in public schools. i was astonished to see how college students buy c compilers for windows to do their homework for unix/c class. isn't it something? they know about linux but, o boy, they're scared of it!!!(wow, wow- i'm not talking about wpi students) good point was brought by goug. we need to know what audience we are going to target and where. if we start the show with linux introduction and discuss the difference between linux and commonly used operating systems, to get people intrigued, and continuously refer people to 'that show' then they'll know the connection, how to obtain previous educational tapes etc. yury ps keep forgeting to indicate the studio location- shewsbury media connection, parker rd. The purpose of this event is to gather linux users for a one day event, mostly to discuss all things linux/unix and to meet other users throughout the area. As for who Jonathan of Frostbite systems is, his company sells computers with linux installed. He gives a percentage back to the distro that is ordered on the machines. His main focus is selling machines for the blind or visually impaired, which he himself is. He is also the podcaster for both Fedora weekly and Debian. I'm using the apu2 from pcengines.ch and I like it because it's quiet and low power and handles my home network needs no problem. Probably the three interface version. I like them alot since they're solid state, no moving parts. If you have over 200gbit internet at home, then the APU2 might not meet your needs... but honestly, it's been working really well for me for years. I'm also running the latest 20.3 releasr of OpnSense and it's ... ok. Not wild about the GUI. And if you want to run traffic shaping, or anti-virus or squid proxy, then you will need a bigger box than the APU2 series. But at that point, you may as well find an old PC and use that. Then at the Linux desktop login window, I select shutdown, and then SuSE is shutting down, it hangs at the point where the drive shares are umounted and then inet says that the system will be halted immediately. It is at this point that SuSE will say that runtime level 0 has been reached, that it has stopped completely. At this point, the system is still running and I can not turn it off, except by turning the power off. What do you think is causing this to happen? and I will be at the WLUG meeting on this Wednesday. Thank you.

Just a quick question, but what feature of Python 2.7 did the hook depend on and could it have been re-written to only need Python 2.6 instead? Seems like a lot of work, and now a bunch more dependencies and hacks to rebuild this system when/if it dies, just to make a developer happy. Not saying this is bad... but maybe saying that core production systems should *try* to stay as simple as possible. And no, I don't always follow my own advice here. Just trying to get you to give us more info on your process here, since I think it's a good example of the balance we all have to try and achieve in our $WORK. Kevin, It's been our experience that hosting your own email server on a consumer ISP is a nightmare. Because of the spam and bots many companies (mine included) simply drop mail from anything that remotely resolves to a consumer ISP IP. There are solutions around this. Amazon has a service (SES) that can front your mail server and will host your MX records. You'll still need to handle a tremendous amount of spam filtering, etc. When you say FTP server I presume you mean SFTP? As for a NAS, you might be interested in something like FreeNAS Scale. It's linux based, it'll run on *anything. *It handles the whole ZFS setup and configuration of services, etc. It also very clearly supports docker and has a nice interface for installing applications. So you can very easily install something like Min.io and now your NAS has S3 bucket capabilities. For security, you might want to think about setting up something like tailscale so you won't have to knock (too many) holes in your firewall to handle the incoming traffic devices and the NAS will be on a private WAN. Oracle cloud has been awesome for me for well over a year now. They provide quite a lot for free and are very good about not letting you enable things that are not free by accident.
