Especially when trying to build a SRPM package, and it dies for no frigging obvious reason. And since I'm planning a fresh install, I've got the Debian and RH9 disks to play with. So maybe I'll just go with Debian for now and see how it goes long term. Thanks for the input. John

As to the two nics, basically you will set up one, say eth0, which is connected to your cable/dsl modem as a dhcp client which will get its ip address from the isp (I assume that, since you are asking a basic question, you did not spring for a fixed ip address which is more expensive; I also assume that you have a broadband connection since you specify two nics). The other nic, say eth1, you set up with a fixed IP address on your local net, for example, 192.168.1.1. If, at this point, your head is swimming, you can either look at the slides from an old WLUG presentation on networking (go to WLUG site, find "Past meeting information" and go to the March 2001, stuff. Slides 47 and 48 give a back to basics summary of the difference between a hub and a switch incidentally) or look into the manual(s) that come with your distro and see if they are as useful as those for SuSE or, get back to me (I suggest directly so we do not clutter the WLUG mail list more than I have been doing lately :-) ) and I am quite willing to try to walk you through the process on a slower one-on-one step-by-step process. The hazards here are that (1) I can easily get in over my head (but, I believe, am willing at least to let you know when that happens) and (2) you may end up wishing as in the Tom Lehrer song "You should never have let me begin ... Nice meeting you tonight, Chuck, and THANKS for the redhat cd's... sec was the freeware event correlation tool I spoke of tonight: It is a straightforward perl script and doesn't implement a full state machine, but it nevertheless provides some inklings of what more complciated event correlators do. Check it at http://kodu.neti.ee/~risto/sec/ The best commercial event corellation tools IMHO are Nervecenter, Taave, Smarts, and Netcool. Each has its niche where it's best in class, and there are others, like HP's ECS, Logec, G2, etc. My friend Doug Stevenson is a specialist in event correlation and wrote the Maji spec: the open source event correlation engine being developed under the umbrella of OpenNMS (yeah, so, it'll be java - but it will also be very feature rich). He masterfully defines some of the layers of granularity that one might see amongst the different offerings in the Event Correlation space. Types we talked about tonight include event correlation (reducing traps) and device correlation (mapping switch states to events). His definitions are listed below... Mike <snipped message> OK... I checked with Shrewsbury's studio; all we need is one Shrewsbury resident to be the sponser to use their studio. The resident must fill out a form and they become a member. No costs are involved to be a member. We may have to buy some tapes; they use miniDV for digital recording. Anyone who uses the equipment must get a bit of training. That's not a big deal. I've had no issues with mine on fedora. For what it's worth. Highly recommend framework. Although I did get the runaround with support about a usb4 dock. Kept getting me to try windows, despite the fact I had. But we have 3, they're rock solid.
