An interesting observation was made that these are mainly outside the USA. Several demos showing the status of the Linux desktop as a viable alternative to Windows. Some talks by KDE and Gnome developers on their current work and plans. Bruce Perrins thinks IBM purchase/merger with Novell/Suse is likely. A major observation for me was that, in the cases of migration to Linux, the biggest cost category was "application migration" - not hardware, software, licensing, training, or support. costs. That is big for me since I do contract application development. Would love to help anyone re-implement Windows apps on Linux. Great talk on Linux terminal Server Project (http://www.ltsp.org/) This stuff works. Great way to use older machines but the best were the low cost, no moving parts remote boxes. No local storage but fully functional otherwise. These guys sell them as well as use them. Jill Ratkevic did an amazing job to pull this off. Apparently this is not the last of these gatherings. So far I printed out a 2x4 base plate and a couple smaller containers. I love the idea that the system is totally open and there are step files available so you can expand on it. between copious amounts of ikea skadis pegboard and my tool chest I think I can organize my tools in a way where I can adhere to the Adam Savage rule of first retrieval. Since we have a meeting this Thursday, this can be yet something else to talk about. Tim. Sadly no. I've looked at DokuWiki a couple of times. The problem is this. I'm lazy. The lowest barrier to entry is simply a directory called "Notes" with a bunch of text files. Being text and using a unix-like system, I've got tools like grep to find stuff. I figure the next lowest thing is some program that lets me take notes that I can then organize into some index and search against it as well. Beyond that now it becomes hosted somewhere, etc. Tim. After moving ethernet cables around to do jit.sw/WlugMA last Thursday, I discovered I had broken another one of those stupid little plastic latch pins on the end plug. I bought a bag of a dozen at Stark electronics about the time of Doug's talk two decades ago. I am down to just three of them. Stark is long gone; where can I get more? I thought of Google, but I could not remember what the plugs were called. After paging quickly through a few slides, there was the answer! They are called RJ-45 plugs and you can buy them through Amazon. They come in bags of 100, which is excessive, but not too expensive; ($10-15). I suppose I will get a bag. That's more than a liftime supply. In a couple more decades you will be able to pick up about 90 of them _real_ cheap at the estate sale, or free from the dumpster. -- Keith

FYI: Regedt32 is a slightly uglier RegEdit but includes the ability to change the permissions of certain keys (i.e. driver enum keys etc). Even when logged in administrator (which is probably why you cant change the registry - are you logged in as administrator or similar rights?) certain keys do not have write/delete access. Using regedt32 allows you to change the permission (assume admin rights) of such keys and therefore modify them. However, I think it is a good idea to do as good a job as possible. Although I admit to little direct experience with such exercises, my impression is that they should not be lightly undertaken. In particular, I gather it takes about ten hours preparation for one hour of finished product (and that ratio is probabley optimistic). You have to identify your audience, identify, rank and organize what topics should be covered, decide on how best to utilize the time, write some sort of at least a detailed outline, if not a full script, try dry run(s). etc. So far, all I see is the idea that a group of well-meaning people are supposed to show up and "wing it". Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The discussion at the end of the last WLUG meeting demonstrated little more that that there were about as many views as to how to proceed as there were people in the discussion. Lots of chiefs, no indians. Now I readily confess that I am very good at spotting the negative side of just about anything. :-) (On a plane ride from Florida to Philadelphia, I once convinved a pharmacological colleague that an idea he was exploring made no sense at all. Years later, when Julie Axelrod got the Nobel prize for that general concept, I had one of those "oh shit" moments. Fortunately for me, the guy from Philadelphia, it turned out, had dropped the issue, but not on the basis of my comments.) The other horn of my dilema, is that I would like to help, but don't want to appear and just be a wet blanket. Since the "event" is right here is Shrewsbury, I'll probably show up (since I can at least function as a "gofer", pull out power cords and the like) but try to maintain a low profile. doug
