Thanks everyone for their input and offers for burning 7.3 to CD's. I actually found what I needed with the existing burn software I have. linux networking question (reformatted for readability)

(i appologize for the previous message that i completely unreadable.) Dear W-LUGgers, I had some strange network related behavior that left me baffled and i wanted to hear some theories from more experienced network admins. The network layout is the following. The network is pretty simple, external traffic passes through a bridged-firewall (OpenBSD, my choice) into an OS X server (not my choice) which handles NAT/DHCP/DNS et al., and all the office computers are dhcp clients to the OS X server. The trouble machines are linux (ubuntu) desktop clients. The scenario is the following. I was doing work on the bridged firewall (OpenBSD) and somehow caused it to kernel panic, oopsie! So the bridged-firewall went down thus no-one had internet access, Dou! i quickly bounced the machine. It came back on-line and clients were able to access the internet, huzzah! But, the strange behavior was in two linux machines within the network that were not able to access some external IPs. My linux desktop could not access 8.8.8.8, when pinging, i could see an arp who-has request originating from my machine, i could see the packet come into the OS X server. But the request always went unanswered. The same behavior happened to another linux desktop but with 192.48.178.134 (sgi.com) My desktop could ping sgi.com. So each linux desktop had *different* unreachable IPs. The rest of the internet was reachable. I tried clearing the arp-cache on the OS X server, then clearing the NAT state tables, then I rebooted the OS X server, none solved the problem. I finally renewed the dhcp lease on my linux desktop machine and that allowed the ping to complete. What would case this behavior? Could it be stale arp-cache on the linux machine? ( I *should* have tried to clear the arp-cache on the linux machine before i renewed the dhcp lease, but i didn’t think of that until after the fact.) The linux machine was sending out arp who-has requests so would a stale cache even matter? Why would no one answer the arp requests? I am not an expert network admin (its just a side job since the company is only 15 people). I don’t expect to get a resolution but i’m interested to hear any theories. Thanks and cheers, — brad PS. Tim, After your feedback and feedback received during theWLUG meeting, it seems that it is better to use something like an Arduino instead of a phone as the signal processing box. To that effect, I googled "arduino dsp" and got a whole lot of hits on DSP shields for arduino and on projects that illustrate how to write arduino sketches that manipulate the stream. One possibility would be to have an Arduino with a DSP and a bluetooth receiver. The bluetooth would communicate with a phone and/or a wearable. The phone would tell the arduino what sounds to look for - that is, provide signatures that should be matched. The wearableand/or the phone would be used to give the event to the user. I think that this configuration along with a battery could be configured to fit in a small fanny pack. The arduino could also use zig-bee to communicate with a home automation system and pass events to the phone/wearable. Yury, You can count me in. I also know my way around a TV production studio. We had talked about doing an introduction to linux. As an aside to that I was thinking that possibly we could do a show on equivalent pieces of software on the linux side of things that could replace (perceived) missing functionality. This would include stuff like Evolution, Mozilla, GnuCash, OpenOffice, mplayer, xmms, etc. What do people think? I agree that it shouldn't be an issue, but for the 10 minutes it would take to double check, I think it is time well spent. 2) I would use (x)minicom and aim it a /dev/ttyUSB0. Then, plug in the device. If it sends anything to the computer, it should show up on the screen for (x)minicom (yes, assuming that it sends something that is a printable character). Let us know the results of these two experiments. Hopefully, that will bring us closer to a solution. Spend the time to learn new things on your own time. Network, network, network. Talk to people, ask about jobs, maybe think about working in a retail computer type job if you can find one. Check monster.com, dice.com, lopsa.org, sage.org and other sites like that for job leads. Check your local colleges, non-profits, high schools, etc. Look for opportunities anywhere you can. Volunteer somewhere doing IT work, even if it's just entering data at first, show a willingness to learn and take on tasks. It also depends on your educational background to a degree. If you have a college degree, talk to your alma mater and see what resources they have you can use. If you haven't done college, or didn't complete it, look into doing so. It's a springboard. Post on facebook that you're looking, join linked-in.com, get the word out you're looking. I personally don't think certifications are worth much, but it can show that you can learn. Look in the paper for waht IT, networking, programming positions are out there, and think about how you can improve you skill set to meet those needs. IT is in a tough spot right now. You might need to actually move to where the jobs are. If you are flexible and willing to move, maybe there's someone like spacex.com looking for a tech out on a pacific island somewhere. Maybe you could get that? I'm just tossing off ideas, but it's upto you to show them that you know your stuff, and that when you *don't* know, you can learn. Being able to learn quickly and on your own is the single best skill you can bring to any employer. Show them that you have this skill. John And no, my $WORK doesn't have any openings right now.
