Hello! I'd like to offer a couple notes regarding your upgrade. `apt list --list` may list more than what you've installed explicitly. It will include the packages installed by default in the system (/var/log/installer/initial-status.gz) as well as all the dependencies of packages you've installed. Anyway - that makes for a useful complete list, certainly, but you can generally work from a much smaller list. I think the list you may want comes from `apt-mark showmanual` to list packages you've specifically installed. All this said, https://askubuntu.com/questions/1383951/apt-mark-showmanual-shows-almost-al… seems to indicate that results based on manual installation flags can be problematic before 20.04, so YMMV (though you can exclude from your list based on the initial-status file above as well). While you can do a bash loop and install the packages that way, you can also list a whole bunch on a single run, e.g. `apt install x y z q`. If you are adding >1000 packages, you're likely to run into a limitation doing it that way, but just mentioning - it'd be a little bit quicker (being able to skip identifying packages already installed via others, and running triggers fewer times, etc). Not that it matters all that much, but if you did come up with a list of just 50-100 you need, it's be a reasonable approach. Note that there are changes between the packages in different versions of the OS. Some packages may no longer be available, having been abandoned, and others may be substituted with different packages and so on. While these suggestions will get you close, it may not quite be perfect. If you did opt for an upgrade instead (which works very well in my experience) such changes will often be pointed out to you and/or accommodated for automatically. Folks asked for an update on this, so here it is. Original problem - Black screen on startup or reboot occurred about 25% of the time, right after the grub menu. No hard drive activity, no boot, no ssh. This problem has existed since I built the computer a year ago. Newer problem - Hard lockups, especially when the load was heavy. I first noticed this when I installed Gutsy on a spare partition. It also happened a few times in Etch, but I was using a custom realtime kernel when it happened. There were also a couple of spontaneous reboots. Hardware - ASUS M2V motherboard, Ath. X2 3800, Kingston RAM, Enermax PSU, some kind of GeForce 6200 with a fan that started getting noisy, Seagate drive, all about a year old. What I did - Replaced the vid card with a slightly older GeForce, and since then, the black screen has only occurred once or twice out of scores of reboots. Got a power supply tester, and the 5V rail read 5.4V one of the times I tested it. Contacted Enermax, and they told me to try a different power supply before I RMA'd mine. Got off the realtime kernel and went back to the stock Etch kernel. No more lockups in debian. Flashed the motherboard with the newest bios after reading that others were having lockup problems with this board. It didn't help. Got a new 350W SilverStone and put it in. Still getting lockups in Gutsy. I believe that the spontaneous reboots are a result of the relative placement of the power button and the wheeled leg of my office chair. I moved the computer back a few inches after I saw the two of them meet once. (Note for the interested builder - buttons on Coolermaster case stick out and require only a light touch. I just built a computer for a friend, and the buttons on the Antec case are recessed and not so easy to press in.) Put the Enermax back in, and everything seems to be fine as long as I stay away from Gutsy and the power button. Thanks again to everyone for their help. Greg

Am I right to assume that for a one-off, i.e. one personal/home user wanting free cloud storage and maybe email, that the Ansible angle should be postponed to follow a dumber/simpler?? How To talk? --Background just to expose my mind: I was a unix sysadin for decades since 1985, but my modern skills got out of date around 2000. Fortunately for me, I lucked into working with Chuck,Frank, many others as a WPI network engineer 2010-2019. Thus, not a sysadmin any longer but just a cubicle wall away from all kinds of IT evolution via WPI. [CONTRACT WORK]

With thanks to the mailing list owners for the privilege of posting here. -- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- - LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR -------------------------- SolarWave Energy, a solar and renewable information technology firm, has a need for a talented individual to assist us on a contract basis (initial project and long term retainer) to set up and help maintain a set of servers. A little workstation support may also be needed now and then. The initial projects include: 1. Wrapping up a combined BackupPC/BACULA project - set policies and procedures - document - test restore 2. Establish a source code management system using Subversion with appropriate clients/tools on workstations - help develop policies, practices, and procedures - debug 3. Help design and then build a 3-tier test to production source code flow scheme using three servers (local, called "DEVELOPMENT", remote 1 called "STAGE", and remote 2 called "PRODUCTION". DEVELOPMENT for testing (playground), STAGE for "staging" to production (final test), and PRODUCTION for release. Other than when in a staging mode, PRODUCTION and STAGE can be switched into service as required should one or the other fail. Full details of these requirements will be provided, of course. Other help that will be needed in near future: 1. Assist company technology move to unified quarters (currently two facilities: Engineering in LITTLETON, MA and Administration/Sales in CAMBRIDGE, MA). Somewhere "in-between" has not been selected yet. 2. Assist in developing a better authentication scheme for remote (embedded) Linux data acquisition boxes. Ongoing: Retainer for telephone consultation, problem-solving, system maintenance, etc. Qualifications: 1. Thorough systems administration knowledge and experience with Linux servers and workstations 2. Depth of knowledge and experience with bash, perl, and php to facilitate automated processes. HTML nice to know. 3. Understands security implications/exposures and includes these considerations in all designs and work. 4. Has available time to focus on major projects such that they can be accomplished within a mutually-agreeable timeframe 5. Can execute a non-disclosure agreement to protect company information 6. Thanks, Karl. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of that! We have inadequate elex here which dips & dims lights frequently. Had sudden power outages a few times, including one very recently. I am not piping the modem logs anywhere; only check this if I notice an obvious problem. Results: Non available. Case (Motorola SB 6120) has only 2 screws, hex, 2 different sizes. No problem. Backplate then comes off & that's it. Nothing else to undo except whet seem to be clips, but we have no prybar tiny & thin enough to pry up these clip things. Case appears uncrackable, execpt maybe by dropping it from an airplane onto solid concrete. However. If it's only the power supply, I could test this by simply replacing the wall wart with an equivalent one from anywhere. Then I'd have to get the ISP to reprovision it, then watch to see if it worked any better after that. I do have an update from Ch4rter business office, which is relevant to my original beef with this ISP. Yesterday afternoon, I followed up by calling the business office, to ask why they changed their policy on what networking components their customers can or cannot own and administer themselves. The last person I spoke with said I am "grandfathered-in" to be allowed to own & run my own modem, since my account was opened before July, 2012 when the new poilcy was instituted (I'm a customer since there was something other than dial-up). Biz office says these techs who came to see me Thursday simply had "inadequate training" or "incorrect information" from their own supervisors. Both techs did look not older than about 3 days over 19. For the trouble call, I was promised a sup-tech & maybe one of these was, but only sup-ing the second guy how to open cardboard boxes of modems, smile at geekly grannies, & maybe how to drive the van. This modem is not in warranty & no longer manufactured (mine 2+ years old). But Motorola tech support confirmed that any old power supply 12V, 0.76A would run it. I'll borrow a power supply from somewhere, then try this thing one more time here before Responsibly Disposing of it by donating to a worthy friend's parts bin. The only reference I can find in the Samsung manual (a CD) is to linux running on a PC. I am not getting very far on the WEB either... Hmmmm. I can still get into my machines via HyperTerminal or putty, but I would prefer direct connection.
