i have used win as tightvnc server and a linux as a client but only for once. When I connected, the other party told me that her wallpaper has disappeared, and she wanted me to put that back there upon leaving her computer. I also didn't see any wallpapers while I was connected. I thought it may because of tightvnc so didn't touch any setting related with the wallpaper. and when I disconnected from her pc she told that the wallpaper was back. I hadn't meant to do that, I think it is a default setting. Just because you do a lot of kernel builds/reboots (and your definition of a lot is my definition of very few, here), that is no reason not to use an initrd. What distribution do you use? You could simply use the packaging scripts that they provide to build your custom kernels. I can boot 2.6.15 on it, with uClibc+busybox from the buildroot project (like Andy's RouterBoard), and still have around 200K on the floppy for apps/data. Speaking o' which.... I have 4 2.4 gig scsi drives in enclosures. Most have centronix connectors. I have some cables too. They are about to be donated to goodwill, but I will hold them till this month's meeting if someone wants them. Regarding M$ enforcement of licenses...

In case you haven't heard, M$ is auditing a dozen or so large school districts for compliance on licensing. Of course, this will be ugly and will run one district an estimated $1,000,000 per year to comply with M$. That's $1,000,000 more then they pay now. M$ is offering a simplified arrangement whereby a school system pays a flat fee for every Intel box (regardless of what it might actually be running) that would run that same district about $30,000. You can see where this is headed! Aside from noting that people's dishonesty about paying the real costs associated with M$ software has gotten them into this trouble (if only because the real costs are not apparent to "management"), I'm wondering what is available as a real alternative to M$ for the great unwashed masses. Of course, the answer I would expect to hear is "Linux!", but... I'm talking about a solution that is useable by those who are not rabid members of a LUG, or Sys admins in their day job. I'm talking about productivity software that will seamlessly read and write M$ file formats (Excel, Word, etc.). I don't know, for example, if Star Office is a real alternative because I don't know how well it interoperates with those who use Word, for example, on a daily basis. Perhaps there is a solution that will reliably run M$ applications without having to buy the OS, but that is only a step in the right direction. I was hoping to hear suggestions about what is out there and if Linux is ready to work seamlessly in heterogeneous High-Tech world. This might be a good topic for one of the WLUG meetings... Steve

Hi Kevin, When I was a newbie, Linux live CDs didn't yet exist, but they do now! I find the Knoppix CD/DVD useful for testing a new piece of hardware (like a laptop) to see if all of the pieces work with Linux. I believe that the Ubuntu CDs can also boot up in a live mode. In this way, you can try Linux without messing with your hard drive, and also see if your hardware works with that distribution. Note that if something doesn't work with the live CD, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work with Linux at all, but demonstrating that something *does* work is a good thing. Just a thought... Spectrum, Recursive dns and interception of root authoritative DNS

Hey all. I was wondering since were all? Worcester or surrounding and dealing with Spectrum as an ISP, if you’ve run into the same thing I have in the last few months. I used to, as you’ll see soon, run unbound as a recursive DNS server in my home network to cache and limit external DNS queries that was the forwarder behind Pihole. It worked great for a very long time. But a few months ago, my internet went down, and It turned out to be non cached dns queries starting to fail. I realized in logs that unbound was getting errors reaching out to dns servers and disabled it until I could investigate instead forwarding to cloud flare temporarily. Now that I have had time to research and investigate, I have found that at least SOMETHING is intercepting my my queries to authoritative DNS servers when I reset unbound and it throw’s away the response because they aren’t “AA” status responses and it never caches the root dns and therefor won’t resolve anything. I come to find out the “authoritative” servers are responding with a status of RA which means it’s not the actual authoritative service when I query manually, dig @198.41.0.4 . NS +norecurse an actual authoritative, and that this is most likely a change Spectrum has made. Has anybody else ran into this? Is it actually Spectrum. I guess I haven’t dug far enough yet to see if its may be a firmware update to my router, UDM PRO yet. Still working on that, but though I’d ask this group first before I dig into that and save myself the time and go straight to ISP workarounds. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to our next meeting!!
